While it may be muted and muffled in normally noisy London, our main vein still flows. The Thames is a constant reminder that life goes on, the river to which so many of us have been drawn. The grassy edges of Battersea Park, the bulb-lit struts of Albert Bridge, the views of the Shard-spiked skyline from Chelsea Harbour. Down in Petersham, cows graze in the meadows by the water. Seagulls caw and swoop. On Taggs Island, the drawbridge has been pulled up for now. But the boats will come back soon. The rowers will row. The tugs will chug again. For those of us desperate for the sea, the briny smell left after low tide is gently, movingly transportative. I have lived here all of my life. But never has the city felt lovelier, more full of love, than now.
