Quando mi trasferii a New York 18 anni fa, comprai una vecchia Schwinn blu per 50 dollari a un mercatino sulla East 10th St, e da allora mi sono sempre spostato in bicicletta. Amo girare quando la città vive grandi eventi: come Williamsburg la notte della vittoria di Obama; il passaggio dall’oscurità alla luce sul Manhattan Bridge nelle notti dopo l’uragano Sandy. Durante il lockdown, pedalavo la domenica mattina per le vie di una città che non avevo mai visto così desolata, ma poi vedevo gli arcobaleni alle finestre e il cowboy nudo a Times Square deserta e realizzavo che New York sta solo dormendo, in attesa di risvegliarsi come ha fatto tante volte nella sua storia.

When I moved to New York 18 years ago, I bought an old blue Schwinn for $50 at a stoop sale on East 10th Street, and I’ve been riding a bike around town ever since. I particularly love being on it as the city experiences global events: happening upon a block party in Williamsburg the night Obama won the presidency; passing from darkness into light on the Manhattan Bridge in the nights following Hurricane Sandy. During the lockdown, I’ve been going on Sunday-morning rides, and I’ve never seen it look so desolate, but then I spot rainbows in apartment windows and the Naked Cowboy wandering in empty Times Square, and I know that NYC is only slumbering, waiting to reawaken – as it has so many times before.
