IN COLOR, THE SENSE OF THE SEA | the power and placidity of coastal nature in the canvases of a disciple of color | Self-taught painter Carmine Messina has been treading the boards of art, for twenty years, with a Florentine exhibition space in Via Senese and various experiences in other parts of Italy. And beginning this year, he is welcoming visitors to his new gallery in Via Stagi in Forte dei Marmi. Messina defines himself a “pittore delle marine”; and in fact, many of his works portray beaches and the sea, in all their moods, with his own peculiar, instinctive immediacy. His canvases rumble with the sound of a stormy sea or barely whisper the silence of a beach in winter; whir and whistle the wind that whips the coastal shrubs and grasses, sigh the calm melancholy of autumn. The sea is always there, an improbable horizon, sole subject or background to dunes and the powerful complexity and delicacy of other manifestations of nature. And so the canvases take form, infused with Messina’s spontaneous, unusual poetry. He uses the palette knife, a technique learned from Sergio Scatizzi, to add matter and movement, skillfully offsetting the natural energy of color with delicate gestures.
But Messina’s production is not limited to the sea; his flowers provide fine contrasts. From the horizontality of the marine views, which attracts eye toward the slit of the horizon, with his flowers the artist cocks his head and creates vertical spaces that “force” the eye to stop and contemplate details. His flowers are explosions of color, troweled material bodies that capture the viewer’s gaze and cancel out time. Portraits, if you will, standing between the figurative and the informal, trellised on color. Orchestrated by the gestures of a skilled technician and discerning disciple of color.
