MIDDLE EARTH | J.R.R. Tolkien couldn’t have imagined anything better: a world between history and oblivion, between civilization and nature, between unstoppable decay and inexhaustible regenerative powers. Industrial architecture in a fantasy world at a park in Calcaferro, in Upper Versilia. | A temple of remembrance whose custodian is nature. A village and its factories, crystallized in a forest. Where the woodland growth tats its densely-branched lace until it interwreathes with the stone of the walls of ancient industrial artifacts. The bark of chestnuts clutches at the skeletons and gears of the abandoned powder mills, fossilized in time. Every element – manmade and natural – united in changing equilibria and new forms bordering on the transcendental. A memory that continues to speak to us. In the deep-throated, incessant song of
water that runs in pebbled beds, over the broken beams and metal sheeting of buildings reduced to ruins; that falls from the top of an arch, a filmy curtain, an illusory doorway opening on the past. Visions and sensations that pervade the Parco Minerario di Molinette archeo-mining site in the territory of Stazzema, less than a half-hour’s drive from the Forte dei Marmi beach. A century ago, this was a small industrial area where pyrite was mined and where, in parallel, manufactories produced gunpowder, blasting powder for use in the marble quarries, and fuses. Along the easy-to-navigate trail that winds from ruin to ruin – and where information panels provide insights into the layout of the industrial settlement – it almost seems possible to hear the rumble of the fast-moving transport cableway or the clatter of the Decauville railway; the thunder of the water lifted and left to fall by the millwheels or the mechanical clank and jangle of the rollers breaking up non-reactive materials. The park is situated above the built-up area of Mulina, on the right bank of the Canale delle Radici, in the Calcaferro locality, which is also known for its freeflowing spring of potable water, now channeled through a public fountain. It is the same water that provided the driving force for the mills; the reason the powder and fuse manufactories were built here. Today, the area is a site of tourist interest. A relict of the early industrial age to visit on your own or accompanied by expert, well-informed guides. In an attempt to valorize the site – and thanks to Region of Tuscany funding – a ring trail was built to touch on what is left of the old factories, about twenty in number; the walk is less than an hour long. When visiting the park, it is advisable to wear hiking boots and long pants and to always pay attention: signs everywhere tell you that the almost all the buildings are unsafe and that access is strictly forbidden. The wooded area that hides this historic heritage is completely wild. It seems, at times, that you are adventuring into unexplored land, through partially resurfaced vestiges of some archaic Middle Earth. The site also embraces ruins and evidence of the mining activities that began here in the Middle Ages, when alchemical prospectors went in search of green vitriol (that is, iron sulfate); and later, iron pyrite; the entrances to the medieval mines, as well as some assay sites, are still visible here and there on the escarpment. The Calcaferro industrial site we see today was created after World War I, when three companies invested in it. The visitable portion – now the Parco Minerario di Molinette – represents only about a third of the powder mills that once stood here, those built by the company headed by the Pocai brothers, which also built the road running from the main street of Mulina as far as Calcaferro, and the rock-hewn tunnel that provides the only access to the site. But the Calcaferro industrial site was a flash in the pan. In 1929, in part due

to the world economic crisis, the entire installation was simply abandoned, although work resumed in 1942 and continued sporadically, with closures and reopenings, until the 1960s.
