The opening of the season at La Scala is much more than just a ‘première’: it’s one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated events, infused with tradition and history, and attended by Milan’s cultural and social elite. As in previous years, in addition to fringe events, the opening will be shown live at cinemas and theatres across the world, and on a mega screen located in the middle of the ‘Ottagono’ in the city’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The event will also be given live coverage on RAI, Italy’s national TV channel. The star of this year’s premiere is Attila, an early work by Giuseppe Verdi that was staged at La Fenice in Venice in 1846. The opera will be performed under the baton of Riccardo Chailly. 7 December Giuseppe Verdi, Attila Teatro alla Scala. Piazza Scala. www.teatroallascala.org
