Roman Walks. Passeggiate romane
The Vision Quest. An adventurous journey to uncover the stories, experiences, characters, myths, vices, virtue
Come?
When creativity reaches its peak and a sense of satisfaction comes over us, we can say that we have entered that state of consciousness that positive psychology calls Optimal State or Flow. Flow or optimal experience happens when a balance is achieved between the challenges of a task or activity we are engaged in, and the skills we employ to face them. The balance between the challenges, and the perception of our skills, are important factors for the Flow. When a challenge exceeds our level of skills, we feel frustration and anxiety. When our level of skills is higher than the challenge before us, we become bored and distracted. As it is only in the middle that this state is experienced, equilibrium is essential. We can find ourselves in the Flow, when we are completely focussed on what we are doing. It is a state that finds its place above all in the creative sphere, very familiar to artists. At work in their atelier or studio, intent on breathing life into their works and creations, they easily lose track of time: they don’t feel tiredness or hunger pangs, and they may continue to work for hours, or days, without interruption, driven by their motivation. The characteristics of this behaviour are maximum concentration, a high level of vigilance, absence of tiredness and an altered perception of the passage of time. One way of describing this sensation is that of being immersed in a river and letting oneself be swept along by the current.
Our aim should be to be the protagonists of our own lives, to strive for experiences that are suited to our “daimon”. With this issue of Roman Walks, we too would like to suggest our readers search for an “optimal experience”. How? By accepting the challenge of the Vision Quest Cards of Douglas Beasley that you will read about on the following pages. Immerse yourselves in your own creativity: it’s within you, even if you don’t know it!
PS: A happy life is a life in which you are completely absorbed by what you do (The Theory of Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi). (F. C.)
