Fiorano, the Prince's Estate. Near the Ancient Appia Regional Park, an estate featuring a high-end vineyard, whose history goes back to the first half of the twentieth century.
A quel punto inizia l’invecchiamento.
Amember of ADSI, the Fiorano Estate is located in the vicinity of the Appian Way Regional Park: a two-hundred hectare farm on volcanic terrain, overlooking the Alban Hills and Monte Cavo, with 12 hectares devoted to vineyards. The estate's history begins in the first half of the twentieth century. Later, in 1946, Alberico Prince of Venosa receives the agricultural property of Fiorano. Upon his death in 2005, Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi inherits the family vineyard. We meet Prince Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi at his Fiorano Estate, in Via del Fioranello, where he oversees the production of world famous wines. We ask the Prince to tell us the history of his brand, a brand which has become a point of reference throughout central Italy.
The estate historically belongs to my family. I was still a student when I began to take an interest in agriculture and, in particular, in viticulture, by following the teachings of my cousin Prince Alberico and of my father Prince Paolo Francesco Boncompagni Ludovisi.
Upon their passing, I put into practice the advice and suggestions I had received, and also tried to follow their wishes, which consisted in the continued respect of the environment and of our traditions.
An organic management, carried out with extreme care through every stage of processing. Rigorous pruning and harvesting done by hand: the grapes are pressed as they once were, together with the wine, and then, as it trickles down through the press, the wine is moved down to the historic cellar. This cellar is a grotto carved into tuff stone, and is located at the base of the two towers (Fiorano's symbol) that are located at the entrance to the estate. Here the wine matures in barrels and is then bottled within niches. At this point, ageing begins. Tell us, Prince, what characterizes your business philosophy?
The company has always been run on an organic philosophy, a philosophy that I make sure to apply through every phase of the natural cycles of cultivation. The vineyard is only accompanied in its growth, but, finally, it is nature that does everything, until the fruit can be harvested. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and pressed softly, and the wine
frutti. Fu così che la scelta cadde sull’utitrickles down, as you said, to the historic cellar. Here, the wine rests, and is labelled by hand only when a customer's order arrives. In this way, the wine's integrity and its correct and harmonious evolution are protected right up to the moment of consumption.
The value and potential of your vineyard, Principe Boncompagni Ludovisi,
arouse the interest and attention of many important professionals in the wine business. During its history, the Fiorano Estate has always availed itself of advice from the best professionals of the time. The company collaborated with the oenologist Giuseppe Palieri in the planting of a vineyard that differed completely from local traditions, in order to obtain a wine of superior quality. And so, the choice fell on the use of international varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon
Ci terrei a ricordare un concerto per fortepiano di Costantino Mastroprimiano, con interventi dell’attrice-scrittrice Patrizia Zappa Mulas, e una mostra fotografica di Maria Mulas, una splendida artista. and Merlot for the production of red wine, and Malvasia and Semillon for the whites. The choice of international vine varieties was dictated by the fact that, at the time, quality wines were French. Following this initial set up, the company availed itself of the advice of Tancredi Biondi Santi, one of the greatest oenologists in the history of Italian wine. And so, the red Fiorano and the white Fiorano were born, which still today, as in the past, enjoy appreciation and recognition everywhere. Lorenzo Costantini is Fiorano's current oenologist, and it is thanks to his help that the white Fioranello and the red Fioranello were born.
The oldest Italian Bordeaux-style bottle, labelled and available on the market for collectors, is a 1956 Fiorano Rosso. In 2015, a single bottle of this wine was sold at the Gelardini & Romani Wine Auction in Hong Kong for more than 1,000 euros!
In addition to wine, however, Fiorano also features an olive grove with more than a thousand trees, with its own organic extra virgin olive oil production. The estate also features organic honey and cereals, a historic cultivation of durum wheat, sheep breeding and, coming soon, cattle. Also featured are reception venues, wedding venues including catering, wine and oil tastings, as well as artistic and cultural events. It is a lively place that, indeed, seems to pulsate with ideas and activities!
I have always thought that agriculture should be close to the world of art and culture. After all, nature creates in a fashion and with rhythms similar to those of artists. This is why I gave Fiorano a cultural and artistic imprint: with the help of friends, musicians, painters, sculptors, writers, we endeavour to organize interesting events.
Worth remembering are a concert for fortepiano by Costantino Mastroprimiano, with the participation of the actress and writer Patrizia Zappa Mulas, and a
It is called Gallerja and is located in the historic centre of Rome. Since 2007, numerous exhibitions have been held there, mainly curated by the art critic and essayist Bruno Corà, and dedicated, among others, to the Austrian painter Arnulf Rainer, the British sculptor David Nash, the Italian painter and photographer Maria Mulas, and the Dutch photographer Jan Dibbets. We ask the Prince to tell us how his art gallery was born.
My commitment to nature, to the production of wine, blends perfectly with the interest I have always had for art. In 2007, I felt a desire to share my passion for contemporary art with others, although this passion was born for ancient art when I was a boy.
And so, the Gallerja space was born, with an exhibition by the great artist Jannis Kounellis, curated by Bruno Corà. Numerous other exhibitions followed, in addition to the artists you mentioned, such as Antony Tapies, Turi Simeti and Sidival Fila.
