Villa Spalletti Trivelli è una lussuosa e riservata residenza d’epoca romana, membro dell’ Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane,
a pochi passi da Piazza del Quirinale. Casa nobiliare con giardino all’italiana, antichi arredi provenienti dalla collezione privata di famiglia, fotografie d’epoca che raccontano la storia della famiglia e dipinti di valore. La costruzione della villa fu opera dell’architetto Domenico Avenali. Chiediamo ad Andrea Spalletti di raccontarci qualcosa sulla storia della villa e sul legame con il campione d’equitazione Raimondo d’Inzeo.
La villa venne costruita dalla mia tris nonna Gabriella Rasponi, i lavori cominciarono nel 1896 e venero ultimati nel 1901. La casa ha rappresentato il centro della vita romana, per la mia famiglia, in quell’epoca. Nel corso degli anni e fino alla morte della nonna, nel 1931, la casa è sempre rimasta molto viva: un vero e proprio centro di cultura per Roma. Nei suoi saloni si sono avvicendati ospiti importanti, italiani e stranieri. Mio nonno, Raimondo D’Inzeo, veniva spesso a trovarci qui nella villa, in quel breve periodo nel quale ci abbiamo abitato.
Un ricordo, un aneddoto?
Un bel ricordo dell’infanzia,
racconta Andrea Spalletti:
il nonno che trasformava i giardini all’italiana della villa in repliche dei percorsi a ostacoli presenti a Piazza di Siena. Faceva correre, e divertire, me e mia sorella che fingevamo di essere cavaliere e cavallerizza della Nazionale Italiana.
Il terreno della villa è proprio davanti ai giardini del Quirinale dove un tempo sorgeva la casa di Tito Pomponio Attico, uomo di cultura, amico di Cicerone. Un secolo di patrimonio culturale. Un cenacolo politico e culturale di prestigio frequentato da illustri personaggi quali Romualdo Bonfaldini, Sidney Sonnino e Rabrindanath Tagore. Nel 2004 la dimora storica di famiglia si trasforma in una esclusiva residenza di lusso per accogliere viaggiatori raffinati ed esigenti.
L’idea di partenza dei miei genitori, racconta Andrea Spalletti, era quella di ricreare le atmosfere di quell’inizio Novecento, mescolandole all’ospitalità di un hotel a cinque stelle. Villa Spalletti Trivelli is a luxurious and reserved Roman residence, member of the Association of Italian
Historic Residences, a few steps from Piazza del Quirinale. A noble house with an Italian garden, antique furnishings from the private family collection, vintage photographs that tell the history of the family, and valuable paintings. The construction of the villa was the work of the architect Domenico Avenali.
We ask Andrea Spalletti to tell us something about the history of the villa and its link with the horse-riding champion, Raimondo d'Inzeo.
The villa was built by my great grandmother Gabriella Rasponi. The works began in 1896 and were completed in 1901. The house was the centre of Roman life, for my family, at that time. Over the years and until the death of my grandmother, in 1931, the house has always remained truly alive: a real centre of culture for Rome. Its salons have been attended by important Italian and foreign guests. My grandfather, Raimondo D'Inzeo, often came to visit us here in the villa, during that short period when we lived there.
Could you tell us about a memory, an anecdote?
A beautiful memory of childhood, says Andrea Spalletti: my grandfather transforming the Italian gardens of the villa into replicas of the obstacle courses of Piazza di Siena. For fun, he would make me and my sister run, as we pretended to be a knight and a horsewoman of the Italian national team.
The grounds of the villa are right in front of the gardens of the Quirinale where the house of Titus Pomponius Attic, a man of culture and friend of Cicero, once stood. A century of cultural heritage. A prestigious political and cultural cenacle attended by illustrious people such as Romualdo Bonfaldini, Sidney Sonnino and Rabrindanath Tagore. In 2004 the historic family dwelling was turned into an exclusive luxury residence to accommodate refined and demanding travellers.
The initial idea of my parents, says Andrea Spalletti, was to recreate the atmosphere of that early twentieth century,

Non abbiamo intenzionalmente riproposto tipici cliché degli alberghi, come il “doorman” o le divise classiche con il nome: piuttosto teniamo la porta d’ingresso chiusa, come le case private, un servizio informale ma raffinato, più libertà possibile agli ospiti per godersi gli spazi e i servizi della villa: relax e libertà come a casa propria.
Al classicismo impeccabile del giardino e dell’arredamento, con stanze che evocano i rioni di Roma, la dimora affianca il confort contemporaneo di una terrazza-solarium, vasche idromassaggio e un centro benessere. Come si armonizza questa miscela di storia e modernità?
Quando ci presentarono il progetto iniziale per la terrazza e le vasche,
prosegue Spalletti, ero abbastanza scettico su come si sarebbe potuto combining it with the hospitality of a five-star hotel. The Villa was meant to feel like a home for the guests and not just an ordinary hotel. It was supposed to allow them to embark on a journey through time, returning to the kind of service that was offered in aristocratic houses in the 1910s and 1920s. An era when service personnel had to be always present, without ever being seen nor heard. We didn’t want to go for the typical clichés of hotels, such as the “doorman” or the classic uniforms with a name badge. Instead, we keep the front door closed, like in private houses, an informal but refined service, as much freedom as possible for our guests to enjoy the spaces and services of the villa: relaxation and freedom as if they were at home.
To the impeccable classicism of the garden and furnishings, with rooms that evoke the districts of Rome, the residence adds the contemporary comfort of a sun terrace, whirlpools and a wellness centre. How do you
integrare con il resto della struttura. Devo ammettere che invece si sono rivelate estremamente in armonia. La nuova terrazza ha permesso di raggiungere una clientela che, fino a quel momento, non aveva dimostrato attrazione verso lo stile classico della villa, permettendoci al tempo stesso di offrire un servizio in più per i nostri clienti abituali.
L’azienda Pomario dei Conti Spalletti Trivelli, è un’azienda agricola che produce olio extravergine di oliva biologico, mentre dal vigneto nascono due vini: il Sariano (rosso) e l’Arale (bianco). Il rosso di Pomario ha ottenuto la medaglia per tre anni consecutivi ai Decanter World Wine Awards. Dalla villa romana gli ospiti possono partire per l’escursione di una giornata alla cantina Spalletti Trivelli a Pomario, in Umbria. Chiediamo a Spalletti di spiegarci il legame tra l’estrazione agricola della famiglia e l’attività turistica, e di raccontarci l’esperienza di una visita a Pomario.
Il legame è decisamente forte, forse più di un tempo, vista l’attenzione che riceviamo dal mondo dell’agricoltura e in particolar modo dal mondo del vino. La nostra proposta di combinare il soggiorno romano con una giornata nella campagna umbra, dà l’opportunità ai nostri clienti, prevalentemente stranieri, di godersi un giorno di tranquillità e relax in campagna, immergendosi nel mondo del vino. La vicinanza di Pomario permette di fare tutto questo senza affanni, partendo e rientrando in orari ragionevoli, per permettersi una cena a Roma.
Passione dei proprietari, desiderio di condividere la storia dei luoghi di origine e le tradizioni delle famiglie, tanto impegno nella gestione e nella manutenzione delle vostre strutture storiche…
Chi opera nel turismo, messo di fronte a tragedie come questa del Covid-19, è sempre il primo a soffrire, a doversi fermare e reinventarsi. Sono fenomeni che rendono il nostro lavoro molto difficile, da 20 anni a questa parte, dal 2001. Nei miei 15 anni di carriera non ho mai conosciuto qualcuno che, in questo settore, non avesse una grande passione verso il concetto dell’ospitalità, e verso tutto quello che da questo deriva. Con pochissime camere come nel caso di Villa Spalletti Trivelli, le possibilità di soddisfazioni economiche sono minime: non è né facile, né scontato che si verifichi. Quando, però, lo sentiamo in modo ancora più intenso, perché ci rende consapevoli di aver fatto tutto quello che era nelle nostre possibilità e verso i nostri ospiti, senza i quali non saremmo nulla. balance this blend of history and modernity?
When they presented us with the initial plans for the terrace and the tubs, Spalletti continues, I was quite sceptical about how it could be integrated with the rest of the structure. I must admit that they have actually fit in really well. The new terrace has allowed us to reach a clientele that, until then, had not been attracted to the classic style of the villa, while allowing us to offer an extra service to our regular customers.
The Pomario dei Conti Spalletti Trivelli business is a farm that produces organic extra virgin olive oil, while the vineyard gives us two wines: Sariano (a red) and Arale (a white). Pomario’s red has been awarded the medal for three consecutive years at the Decanter World Wine Awards. From the Roman villa, guests can leave for the day trip to the Spalletti Trivelli winery in Pomario, Umbria.
We ask Andrea Spalletti to explain the link between the family’s agricultural extraction and their tourist business, and to tell us about the experience of a visit to Pomario.
The link is certainly strong, perhaps more than it once was, given the attention we receive from the world of agriculture and especially from the world of wine. Our suggestion to combine a Roman stay with a day in the Umbrian countryside, gives our customers, who are mainly foreigners, the chance to enjoy a day of tranquillity and relaxation in the countryside, immersing themselves in the world of wine. The proximity of Pomario allows you to do all this without any trouble, leaving and returning at reasonable times, with time over for a dinner in Rome.

Those who work in tourism, faced with tragedies such as this covid-19, are always the first to suffer, to have to stop and reinvent themselves. These are phenomena that have made our work very difficult, for the last 20 years, since 2001. In my 15-year career I have never met someone who, in this sector, did not have a great passion for the concept of hospitality, and for everything that stems from it. With very few rooms as in the case of Villa Spalletti Trivelli, the chances of economic satisfaction are minimal: it is neither easy nor obvious for it to happen. When, however, it does, we feel satisfaction even more intensely, because it makes us aware that we have done everything that was in our power and all for our guests, without whom we would be nothing.
