Palazzo Patrizi Montoro, membro dell’ ADSI, è un gioiello barocco nel cuore di Roma. Un piano nobile strutturato nella tipica architettura settecentesca, con la fuga di saloni successivi. Arredi interamente originali e una straordinaria collezione di dipinti alle pareti. A parlarcene è Flaminia Patrizi Montoro.
Il palazzo costruito nella fine del Cinquecento venne acquistato prima dalla famiglia Aldobrandini e poi da Costanzo Patrizi, tesoriere di Papa Urbano VIII, un vero mecenate che incaricò Raffaello Vanni di affrescarlo. Nel corso dei secoli si sono avvicendate nella famiglia diverse personalità, alcuni delle quali lo hanno profondamente migliorato. Alla fine del Settecento Cunegonda di Sassonia sposò Giovanni Patrizi e il palazzo si aprì ad un gusto mitteleuropeo del quale ancora custodiamo alcuni oggetti. Cunegonda, rappresentata più volte nelle sale del palazzo, ha portato trasformazioni davvero innovative negli arredi e nella distribuzione degli spazi. Con mio marito Patrizio, abbiamo cercato di proseguire in questa strada. La famiglia Patrizi, di origini senesi è imparentata con la famiglia romana dei Marchesi Montoro. Ma lo stemma di famiglia cita altri nomi e la storia racconta del titolo di “Vessilliferi dei Cavalleggeri e delle Lance Spezzate di Santa Romana Chiesa”. Che onori! Ma quanti oneri. Ci racconti qualcosa Flaminia. I Patrizi, continua Flaminia Patrizi Montoro, facevano parte della così detta “nobiltà nera”, il primo vessillifero fu Bernardino agli inizi del Seicento mentre l’ultimo è stato mio suocero Filippo. La Guardia Nobile, costituita da Pio VII, venne sciolta da papa Paolo VI negli anni Sessanta. Noi custodiamo a casa il vessillo papale. Anche il cognome nel tempo si è trasformato, oggi probabilmente sarebbe stato Chigi Montoro. Gli onori si meritano e non si ereditano: la tradizione di queste famiglie fa parte della storia del nostro paese ed è un grande valore e un grande privilegio che da salvaguardare.
In Umbria vicino Narni, c’è l’antico feudo di Montoro, il cui nome deriva dalla contrazione di “Monte d’Oro”. Palazzo Patrizi Montoro, a member of ADSI, is a baroque jewel in the heart of Rome. A noble floor of typical eighteenth-century architecture, with the prospect of later salons. Entirely original furnishings and an extraordinary collection of paintings on the walls. Flaminia Patrizi Montoro talks to us about it.
The palazzo, built in the late sixteenth century, was first purchased by the Aldobrandini family and later by Costanzo Patrizi, treasurer of Pope Urbano VIII, a real patron who commissioned Raffaello Vanni to fresco it. Over the centuries, several diverse figures emerged in the family: some made profound improvements, others limited themselves to maintaining what was already there.
At the end of the eighteenth century, Kunigunde of Saxony married Giovanni Patrizi and the palazzo was influenced by central European taste and we still have some objects typical of that style. Kunigunde, portrayed several times in the halls of the palazzo, brought really innovative transformations to the furnishings and distribution of the space. With my husband Patrizio, we tried to continue along these lines and contextualize the tradition that continues to live between those walls.
The Patrizi family, originally from Siena, is related to the Roman family of the Marquises Montoro. But the family coat of arms mentions other names and history tells of the title of “Vessilliferi dei Cavalleggeri e delle Lance Spezzate di Santa Romana Chiesa”. What honours! But what a burden. Flaminia, tell us something more about it.
The Patrizi, Flaminia Patrizi Montoro says, were part of the so-called “black nobility”, the first to hold the banner was Bernardino at the beginning of the seventeenth century while the last was my father-in-law Filippo. The Noble Guard, founded by Pius VII, was dissolved by Pope Paul VI in the 1960s. We keep the papal banner carefully at home. Even the surname over time has changed, today it would probably have been Chigi Montoro. Honours are to be deserved and not inherited: the tradition of these families is part of the history of our country and is a great value and a great privilege that must be safeguarded.
In Umbria, near Narni, there is the ancient fiefdom of Montoro, whose name derives from the contraction of “Monte d'Oro”. An ancient village with caves excavated for the preservation of wine, transformed into a family castle. With its 500 hectares, this is the location of the headquarters of the Patrizi Montoro farm that produces refined wines and fine olive oil.

Alla fine del Settecento Porzia Chigi Montoro Patrizi l’aveva destinata a coltura agricola e indirizzata alla produzione di vino e olio. Oggi il mercato del vino è molto dinamico e bisogna rinnovarsi continuamente. Stiamo cercando di rendere Montoro all’avanguardia con un programma di sviluppo al quale si sono appassionati anche i nostri figli, Altea e Giulio (nelle foto di queste pagine), e il primogenito Filippo. Nel 2021 saranno in produzione altre tre etichette e la prossima vendemmia vedrà nuove qualità di vino. Prossimamente contiamo di inaugurare un museo e una biblioteca. Passione dei proprietari, desiderio di condividere la storia dei luoghi di origine e le tradizioni delle famiglie, tanto impegno nella gestione e nella manutenzione delle vostre strutture storiche…
Le spese sono enormi e strutture come la nostra spesso mancano dell’agilità necessaria per diventare qualcos’altro. In poche parole, da splendide fortune rischiano di diventare fardelli pesantissimi.

Today, the wine market is very dynamic and needs to be continuously renewed. We are trying to put Montoro at the forefront with a development program of which our children, Altea and Giulio (in the photos on these pages), and our eldest son Filippo, have also become passionate. In 2021 three more labels will be produced and for the next harvest we will see new wines. We plan to inaugurate a museum and a library in the near future.
The passion of owners, the desire to share the history of your places of origin and the traditions of your families, all your commitment to managing and maintaining these historic structures, however, rarely seem to be repaid given the devotion and investments that are required...
Our expenses are huge and facilities like ours often lack the agility needed to be turned into something else. In short, from splendid fortunes these properties risk turning into very heavy burdens.
