Alla fine del XVIII secolo arriva in Italia Napoleone Bonaparte. L’antenato Luigi Rossi Danielli vuole evitare la spoliazione dei beni della Chiesa e acquista dai frati Domenicani l’annesso convento e il podere di 18 ettari, in località Merlano alle porte di Viterbo. Alla fine del periodo napoleonico Luigi Rossi Danielli restituisce in dono il convento ai frati Domenicani, ma tiene per sé il podere con la villa. Le vicende storiche da raccontare sarebbero molte, ma a Luigi e Maria Renata chiediamo cosa amano ricordare sulle origini della famiglia e della loro villa.
Tra le vicende storiche da raccontare, precisa Luigi Rossi Danielli, quello che fece mia nonna per salvare alcuni ebrei dai nazisti, durante l’ultima guerra. Ma quello che ricordo con piacere sono le visite di Re Gustavo IV di Svezia, durante i periodi estivi, quando veniva personalmente a Viterbo per seguire le campagne di scavi, in una proprietà della famiglia ad Acquarossa.
Suo padre, rompendo con la tradizione della famiglia Rossi Danielli, lascia l’Alto Lazio e Viterbo, per andare a vivere in Sicilia: lì conosce sua madre e lì lei è nato. La sua famiglia poi ritorna a Viterbo, ma anche lei, alla fine, torna in Sicilia per sposare Maria Renata…
L’amore per la Sicilia è una cosa che ci si porta dentro dalla nascita, perché la Sicilia ti prende il cuore. A Viterbo ci sono tornato in una seconda parte della mia vita: adoro essere il custode delle tradizioni che la mia famiglia mi ha tramandato e in Maria Renata ho trovato una perfetta alleata.
Una villa rinascimentale considerata il vostro“unico lusso“: un vecchio casale oggi restaurato alla perfezione, un bellissimo parco circostante. Come conciliate la vostra vita familiare con ospiti eccellenti quali Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Harry Styles, Lila Azam Zanganeh, e quanta deve essere la passione e la capacità imprenditoriale?
Credo che oltre a parlare di passione e di capacità imprenditoriale bisogna parlare anche di amore che lega il proprietario alla proprietà. Se non c’è amore credo che tutto ciò venga meno. La nostra accoglienza riflette il nostro modo di vivere quotidiano: lavoriamo ogni giorno per far sì che i nostri ospiti si sentano a casa loro, ma con un servizio 5 stelle. Piccole attenzioni che fanno la differenza: fiori freschi in camera, un letto aperto per la notte, il personale pieno di attenzioni.
Passeggiando nella sua proprietà, lei mi ha detto: “se vi regalassi le chiavi di tutto ciò, dopo l’entusiasmo iniziale, e una volta compreso l’onere che comporta mantenere tutto ciò, sono certo che me le ridareste indietro“.
At the end of the 18th century, Napoleon Bonaparte arrives in Italy. The family's ancestor, Luigi Rossi Danielli, wants to avoid the dispossession of Church property by the French and buys the adjoining convent and 18-hectare farm, located in the Merlano area on the outskirts of Viterbo, from the Dominican friars. At the end of the Napoleonic period, Luigi Rossi Danielli returns the convent to the Dominican friars as a gift, but keeps the farm and Villa for himself. Many historical events took place at the time, but we ask Luigi and Maria Renata what they would like to point out about the origins of their family and the Villa.
Among the historical events worth telling, Luigi Rossi Danielli specifies, is what my grandmother did to save a number of Jews from the Nazis during the last war. But what I remember with most pleasure, are the summer visits of King Gustav IV of Sweden, when he would come to Viterbo in order to personally follow the archeological excavations taking place on a family property in Acquarossa.
Your father, breaking with the tradition of the Rossi Danielli family, leaves Upper Latium and Viterbo to go live in Sicily: there he meets your mother and there you are born. Your family then returns to Viterbo, but, in the end, you too return to Sicily in order to marry Maria Renata...
The love for Sicily is something one carries inside oneself from birth, because Sicily truly wins your heart. I returned to Viterbo during a second period of my life: I love my role as keeper of the traditions that my family has handed down to me, and in Maria Renata I have found a perfect ally.
A Renaissance Villa that you consider your “only luxury,” a now perfectly restored old farmhouse, a beautiful surrounding park: how do you reconcile your family life with prestigious guests such as Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Harry Styles, Lila Azam Zanganeh, and how much passion and entrepreneurial ability does that involve?
I believe that, in addition to considering passion and entrepreneurial ability, we must also talk about the love that binds an owner to his property. Lei ha riportato una frase, continua Luigi Rossi Danielli, che scherzosamente uso dire a chi ci viene a trovare. Abitare in posti come questi è sicuramente impegnativo, ma non potrei vivere in maniera differente. Farmi carico di tutto ciò è una gioia oltre che un privilegio. Provenire da una famiglia ricca di storia, vantare illuminati antenati come il suo bisnonno archeologo, trascorrere sin da bambino intere estati a Viterbo in questa villa, ha fatto si che lei diventasse il custode designato di tanta bellezza. La sua passione per le robinie secolari, le antiche gallerie di bosso, il vasto uliveto e le magnifiche ortensie colorate che circondano la casa, si intuisce appena si varca il cancello d’ingresso. Lei ha inoltre detto che il giardino è il biglietto da visita di una proprietà…

Maria Renata Catalano Rossi Danielli, siciliana di nascita viterbese e romana di adozione. Vulcanica, viaggiatrice e curiosa, padrona di casa e ottima cuoca è nata a Palermo in una città che definisce “ricca di tesori, contrasti e profumi “. È cresciuta in una “famiglia elegante, leggera ed allegra”, come lei l’ha descritta, con un padre che era solito affermare “noi non abbiamo palazzi ma regge. Lei ama definirsi “complicata, frizzante e appassionata“, e si è resa famosa per il suo “vivere con stile”. Arrivata a Viterbo, la dimora di suo marito le ha rapito il cuore: vuole raccontarci qualcosa di lei e del suo “Good Living”? In cosa sente di aver caratterizzato Villa Rossi Danielli? Sono arrivata a Viterbo per amore! Mi ha appassionato subito personalizzare la nostra casa, renderla più confortevole. Il parco è stato rinnovato mantenendo l’atmosfera di un tempo. Gli ambienti sono stati completamente ristrutturati senza seguire le mode del momento. Il Bello non conosce tempo, ma la cosa più importante è l’atmosfera di una casa. Quella la devi saper creare: un fiore, l’ombra di un oggetto riflessa su una parete, un vecchio asciugamani di lino in bagno. Di belle case è pieno il mondo, ma nella nostra “ogni angolo parla di noi!”. Lei ha tenuto una “lecture” sul tema del lusso alla Scad University, ad Atlanta. Ci racconti. Il concetto di lusso, conclude Maria Renata Rossi Danielli, cambia a seconda dell’età e della cultura. Dopo questa estate frenetica, mi viene da dire che il lusso è avere tempo per viaggiare, leggere la pila di libri accumulati e stare di più con le persone care. Pensavo da giovane che “lusso” fosse possedere un accessorio più o meno costoso e alla moda, ma oggi detesto tutto ciò che è omologazione. Non mi piace portare con me una borsa costosa ma troppo vista. “Lusso” è dormire in vecchie lenzuola di lino “croccanti”, bere una tisana in una vecchia tazza di finissima porcellana, essere cittadina del mondo e sentirsi a casa ovunque: arrivare a Parigi ed avere un’amica che organizza un pranzetto in tuo onore. have also said that the garden acts as a property's business card...
I smile as I think of our entrance gate, so full of history but also our home's sore spot. Everyone mentions it. Maria Renata Catalano Rossi Danielli, Sicilian by birth, adoptive to Viterbo and Rome: volcanic, a traveller, curious, a hostess and an excellent cook, she was born in Palermo, a city that she defines as “rich in treasures, contrasts and fragrances.” She grew up in an “elegant, light and cheerful family,” as she describes it, with a father who used to say “we don't have buildings but royal palaces”. I came to Viterbo for love! I felt immediately passionate about customising our home, making it more comfortable. The park has been renovated while maintaining the atmosphere of the past. The rooms have been completely renovated without following the fashions of the moment. Beauty is timeless, but the most important thing is the atmosphere of a home. You must be able to create that: a flower, the shadow of an object reflected on a wall, an old linen towel in the bathroom. The world is full of beautiful houses, but in ours“every corner speaks of us!”
You gave a lecture on the subject of luxury at Scad University in Atlanta. Tell us about it.
The concept of luxury, Maria Renata Rossi Danielli concludes, varies according to age and culture. After this hectic summer, I feel like luxury consists in having the time to travel, time to read that pile of accumulated books, and more time to spend with loved ones. As a young woman, I thought that “luxury” meant owning a more or less expensive or fashionable accessory, but today I hate everything that is homologated. I don't enjoy carrying an expensive but overly fashionable handbag. “Luxury” is sleeping in old, “crunchy” linen sheets, drinking herbal tea from a vintage cup of the finest porcelain, being a citizen of the world and feeling at home everywhere, arriving in Paris and having a friend organize a lunch in your honour.
