PAPER MUSEUM IN AMALFI

Housed inside an old medieval Paper Mill from the 14th century, on the road that leads to Valle delle Ferriere, it certainly is one of the most peculiar Museums in the Amalfi coast. Part of it is carved into the rock and it offers a yesteryear atmosphere. It hosts the equipments once used to grind linen fibers, cotton and hemp and to produce the prestigious Amalfi paper used to note down trade accounts, trade being the main activity in the history of the Maritime Republic. The old devices, restored and put in work, reconstruct the entire process of papermaking. The age – old machineries that are kept here include the old wooden hammers activated by a water wheel, the press used to remove excess water from the sheets, the “continuous paper” machine and the Dutch press. The Museum offers the chance to witness the creation of hand-made paper sheets and the functioning of old water mills, activated by the waters of the Canneto torrent. Moreover, inside the Museum, manuscripts, engravings, posters and flyers are exhibited plus a photography and documentary exhibition and a thematic library are housed. Guided tours are available in various languages. Situato in un’antica cartiera medievale del XIV secolo, lungo la strada che porta alla Valle delle Ferriere, è, senza dubbio, uno dei Musei più originali della Costiera. È scavato parzialmente nella roccia e regala un’atmosfera di altri tempi. Ospita le attrezzature impiegate un tempo per tritare fibre di lino, cotone e canapa e realizzare la prestigiosa carta amalfitana che veniva utilizzata per annotare i conti commerciali, la principale attività della Repubblica marinara. Gli antichi macchinari, restaurati e resi funzionanti, ricostruiscono l’intero ciclo di produzione della carta. Tra gli attrezzi secolari che vi sono custoditi ci sono gli antichi magli in legno azionati da una ruota idraulica, la pressa utilizzata per l’eliminazione dell’acqua in eccesso dai fogli, la macchina continua in piano e la macchina olandese. Il Museo offre la possibilità di assistere alla fabbricazione a mano di fogli in carta e al funzionamento degli antichi mulini ad acqua, attivati dalle acque del torrente Canneto. Nel Museo sono, inoltre, in esposizione manoscritti, incisioni, manifesti e locandine, e sono allestite un’esposizione di fotografie e stampe documentaristiche e una biblioteca a tema.
