American interior designer Tamara Magel explains how she built her country house near New York with vintage and tailor made furnishings

The Hamptons peninsula, at the eastern end of Long Island, is dotted with villas built in the last century for the VIPs of the time, which today are home to celebrities such as Brooke Shields, Richard Gere, Beyoncé, Calvin Klein. And here, in a wooded area in East Hampton, Tamara Magel (www.tamaramagel.com), a young and beautiful interior designer, well known in the area, has built her new residence from scratch, with an attached design studio. Magel talks to Ville & Casali about the briefing she started with: "I wanted the house to have the informal style of a farm and I tried to give it the look of a lived-in building." Being the home of a designer, the concept of an elegant home inevitably included unusual touches, all in the name of the green interior design, for which Magel is famous. As always, Tamara Magel personally selected every element, from building materials to plumbing and flooring. The furnishings include many elements tailored made by her, but also by some vintage authors, such as the Soriana di Afra and Tobia Scarpa sofas from the 70s, designed for Cassina, and Camaleonda by Mario Bellini, or the 70s bathroom lamps, from the Barbini laboratory in Murano. In the kitchen, the British country look has glamor touches. All the furniture, a mix of modern finishes and classic Shaker style, was designed by her and made by a local cabinetmaker. Tamara, who loves to play with the tactility and texture of materials, has a real passion for marble.
