Cosmopolitan villa at high altitude
In St. Moritz, architect Pietro Corcione has renovated an apartment by alternating traditional Engadin features with contemporary tailored furnishings
In St. Moritz, architect Pietro Corcione has renovated a 250m2 apartment that was once two adjacent dwellings, redesigned to become the refuge of a high-flying business couple with children keen to live in the mountains all year round. “Every room in the house seems to be connected to the surrounding landscape thanks to a harmonious mix of natural materials and calm nuances. I wanted to imagine a bespoke space that successfully meets the needs of a large family while also adopting a contemporary and cosmopolitan style, to perfectly represent the character of the owners,” explains Corcione. By working closely during the renovation with Manuel Tenca, owner of “The Great Living Estate”, the architect was able to design a functional apartment full of traditional Engadin features, such as rough split stone cladding and wooden matchboarding. The living room is one large open space and connects to the outside through three large full-height sliding doors. Access to the bedrooms is granted by a long corridor which, as well as its functional role, also boasts charming scenic views. Wood panelling concealing a row of cupboards and linear strip LED lighting along the edge create an exceptional architectural backdrop, made even more beautiful by the porphyry slab floor laid crosswise, like an elegant rug. Equally interesting was the decision to divide the master bedroom into two areas separated by a glass wall.
