How did you get into fashion? Tamaki Fujie: “It had a lot to do with my family. In the 1920s my grandmother set up one of the first fashion colleges in Japan. My mother, instead, worked as a couture and jewellery designer.” Where did you study at university? “I gained a BA in Fashion Print from Central Saint Martins.” How would you describe the style of your brand? “My style can be defined as magic realism – a playful mix of street and luxury. It’s about a refined urban femininity with a touch of fantasy, reflecting my view of how a woman can be dressed.” What is unique about your
brand? “Like all things Japanese, my brand is all about details. I work with Japanese craftsmen to create everything down to the buttons. But I’m also an illustrator and print-maker by trade, so I incorporate these elements into my collections.” Whom do you design for? “I don’t think about a certain type of woman with a specific figure or age. I just imagine someone who enjoys fashion, but has her own mind and sense of style.” Which fabrics do you use? “I like fabrics made in Europe such as Italian silk, French lace or Belgian faux fur, along with Japanese fabrics.” What is the biggest com
pliment or most useful criticism you have received about your work? “Very original was the biggest
compliment, while too original was the most useful criticism.”
