SOULPOT STUDIO
What motivated you to set up your brand? Sujinn Kim: “In 2007, when I was at college majoring in media art, the world I saw consisted of messages and media. For me, a ‘brand’ is the medium that allows people to participate in a comprehensive experience. So I decided to give resonance to our lives with a brand instead of with installation art, and fashion was the first tool I chose to use.” What was the main challenge you faced at the beginning? “Everything has been challenging since I made my debut at 23 years old, and there has been no perfect success so far.” Where do you produce your collections? “I develop and make my collections in Seoul. The finishing skills for garment production in Korea are actually remarkable. As a designer, I’m also very sensitive to the environment and feelings around me.” How would you describe the style of your brand? “I develop garments that delimit the human body and are devoid of meaningless details. I concentrate on the changing space of human movement. I don’t want clothing to come before humans. The style of Soulpot Studio conjures up a calm lyricism that moves human emotions. It’s not just about functionality. My brand suggests a lifestyle that is intertwined with concepts and symbols, and also changes its perception with karma, not genre.”
What is the biggest compliment or most useful criticism you’ve received about your work? “The greatest compliment is when people say that ‘anti-fashion’ is the base of my business method and the result of my collection. But it’s also an ambiguous keyword to be wary of.”
