MUSLIN BROTHERS
How did you two meet? Yaen Levi and Tamar Levit: “We met at Shenkar College in Tel Aviv. Yaen’s background is in architecture, while Tamar left school in the final year to experiment in a broader sense.” What is your brand’s DNA? “Simple and easy to grasp, while challenging conventions. There’s also a gender-bending element, and a really graphic style that clashes with tailored details.” What are your signature pieces? “Our oversized unisex T-shirts. They’re fancy but not overdone.” How are you influenced by your country? “Israel is a new nation born from immigration, with mixed cultures trying to build an identity. We like to play with identities, combining them from a different perspective.” Sources of inspiration? “Lots of our pieces start from the fabrics. We’re always scouting for new stock which we keep in our archive.”
Where do you produce? “In Israel, to be close to the production.” What was the turning point in your career? “We had a third partner who left us after the first year. It was a make-or-break moment that showed us how determined we were.” Collaborations? “In Prague we met the hat designer Sofya Samareva. We liked each other’s fashion and decided to collaborate for the last Tel Aviv Fashion Week.” What’s next for Muslin Brothers? “We’ll be based in London until April 2016, in an incubator for young designers. We want to grow while preserving our naivety.”
