SATU MAARANEN

- satumaaranen.com - @satumaaranen since 2013

When did you decide to become a fashion designer? Satu Maaranen: “I always dreamt of being a fashion designer. But in my twenties I thought it was unrealistic to start a career in this field, so I decided to study as an art teacher. However, after a year I realised it wasn’t enough and I enrolled in the Fashion Department at Aalto University.” What was the turning point in your career? “Winning the Grand Prix at the Hyères Festival in 2013. Since then my hands have been full of work and the visibility has been amazing. I’ve been able to create an international network within the industry.” What is the style of your brand? “Avant-garde, contemporary and sculptural. Satu Maaranen also includes abstract hand-painted prints.” What is the source of inspiration for your prints? “It usually comes from nature. But I might also combine something unexpected, like metallic flocking from the Space Age.”

How much does Finland influence your work? “I’m influenced by a mix of practical Scandinavian minimalism, Russian opulence and Marimekko brainwash.” Whom do you design for? “A bold and practical woman who is perfectly in touch with herself. A free-minded spirit.” Where do you produce your collections? “In Finland, Estonia or Italy. Some embroideries are crafted in India.” Where do you sell your creations? “I sell from my studio in Helsinki and send a lot of orders to China, Saudi Arabia and New York.”
