CHARLES JEFFREY LOVERBOY UNITED KINGDOM

The Loverboy club night is linked to your brand name. Can you explain this? Charles Je rey: “Loverboy is about a feeling that’s at the core of everything I do. The label was born through nightlife, and that spirit permeates every element of my work. This is where my love of performance is drawn from, as well as a sense of dress-up and creating safe spaces for people to express themselves.” How important was the

internship at Dior for your work? “It really was like learning from the best, so it was a hugely in uential part of my life. One of the most formative aspects was the detailing: there’s so much intricacy in the work they do at Dior.” What kind of man do you have in mind when you create a collection? “There isn’t one particular kind of person in mind, although I did once describe Loverboy’s man as anyone who looks good sweating on a dance oor in a three-piece suit! We think about a cast of characters, and the dreamscapes they might exist in.” How do your British roots in uence your aesthetics? “There’s de nitely an impact from my Scottish origins. I don’t shy away from tartan! My childhood is a big part of my identity, and it’s always sneaking into my inspiration. Growing up in Britain, I was surrounded by cultural in uences that have shaped the way I think. I’m a child of the MySpace generation, I was obsessed with emo references, The Horrors, ‘The Mighty Boosh’ and so on – all weird and intrinsically British touch points.” •
