It takes cour age to launc h an e-commerce site in a countr y that doesn’t have broadband. Riccardo Basile has shown that he has that kind of cour age.
After getting an economics degree from Bocconi Univ ersity, a master’s degree in Business Administration at the NYU-Ster n Sc hool of Business in New York, and after a stint in Uganda as a pro-bono consultant, he left a promising career at McKinsey & Compan y (“my militar y ser vice”) in 2012 to co-found Lazada, the first online shopping site in southeast Asia. Four y ears later, the compan y sold for 1.5 billion dollars . Now, it is wor th 3 billion. Today, at age 39, Riccardo is ready to take new r isks. In a few months , he will launc h the first socialcommerce app in Europe , along with his colleague Elizabeth Cr aft Townsend-Rose. “Our mobile platfor m is inspired b y the Asian model. We want to allow customers from all ov er the world to discov er brands, creative people and boutiques with a stor y to tell. And to allow tec hnology to ser ve talented b usinesspeople in the fields of f ashion and beauty, star ting with those who hav en’t found their niche in tr aditional retail and e-commerce ,” explains Basile . The app offers a social-media shopping exper ience made up of photos , videos, posts and shar ing capabilities. It will be a launc hing pad for influencers who will be ab le to promote brands in their vir tual stores. “The true b usiness objective is to create new growth opportunities for those who make quality products .” Riccardo considers himself to be a luc ky man. However, luc k is not enough when it comes to “engineering” one’s future. It takes passion, commitment and cour age. “I gave up some pretty incredible offers for this project. But this is m y dream, and I w ant to tr y to be an example for other y oung people, showing them that they can win and make a difference without c heating and without onl y thinking about profits .
I believe in Ital y, I believ e in Europe, and I believ e that the Inter net needs to help us break up monopolies . This is what true rev olution is all about for me .”
