Introducing the winners of Scouting for Africa 2020
After months of selections Vogue Talents and African Fashion Foundation have chosen Emmy Kasbit and Rich Mnisi.
Last February Vogue Talents and African Fashion Foundation launched Scouting for Africa 2020, the scouting project, with the support of IFFAC, dedicated to African designers living in Africa or anywhere else in the world. The aim of this project is to showcase all the continent’s creatives who are proving their talent and seeking to find their place on the fashion scene. Among the numerous applications received this year from designers coming from many different African states, two of them definitely stood out by their creativity and ability to use ancient techniques and historical craftsmanship in innovative ways. The two winners of this year’s Scouting for Africa are Emmy Kasbit from Nigeria and Rich Mnisi from South Africa. Emmanuel Okoro founded Emmy
Kasbit in 2014 with the idea of drawing on the past as a constant inspiration in his work. Hence the sartorial approach that defines most of his creations is perfectly combined with the techniques of local craftworkers using indigenous fabrics to create modern pieces. Rich Mnisi is the founder of the eponymous brand, born in 2015, fusing the African heritage with modern global culture. His design unites extreme silhouettes with a minimalistic approach, constantly influenced by references to Pop culture. Then the garments are produced by local women who infuse them with their skills, including upcycling techniques. Both the winners will have the chance to showcase their collections during the upcoming digital Milan Fashion Week in September.
