CHINO CHECK

-

When you Google “chinos chess” it’s a mind blown scenario. No, there is no connection between the trouser variation that gained popularity thanks to US Army uniform in the South Pacific – although, yes, there are chinos in The Queen’s Gambit. No, what emerges is that Google’s algorithm rightly thinks you are less likely to be a desperate L’Uomo Vogue writer than a poor typist (and I am in fact both). The result is you discover a game called Xiangqi, from China, is connected to so-called Western chess, as well as “chaturanga, shogi, Indian chess and janggi” (hat tip to Wiki). Game history, like fashion history, encompasses many connection variations – however that cannot change that the closest intersection between chess and chinos is a typo.
