Localism has long been a deal in surfing but I don’t think it relates to clothing as strongly as in skate: nobody’s going to get all Patrick Swayze on your ass if you wear Isabel Marant or studded Celine down to the break. And t-shirts are t-shirts, right? Even if Gucci’s pinkly packaged intertwining of collegiate signs and end of days theory is a pretty complex recipe. The brand Silted is new to me, and looks potentially very interesting: although based in landlocked Emilia Romagna it includes a “collective of surfers” in its group of creators and seems to produce some very cultured riffs on surfish reefs. An Italian surf-hearted brand with a broader creative outlook and domestic fabrication expertise might well be a beautiful thing.
