A massive urban redevelopment scheme has changed the face of the Centrale district

For several years, the Centrale district, which includes the Stazione Centrale and Piazza Repubblica, has been undergoing a massive urban redevelopment. By

The vast area encompassing Milan’s Stazione Centrale, as we know it today, is the result of numerous urban redevelopment projects, beginning in 1931, and the work is ongoing. Although it was built only twenty years earlier, the station was believed to be inadequate, due to its monumental architectural style, a mixture of Liberty and Art Decò, and its lack of easy accessibility to the platforms which were located above street level. Since then, the station has been remodeled several times. And now, more than a century later, the face of the station as we now know it continues to change thanks to the continuous openings of new shops, businesses and exhibition spaces. Over the past few years, the area’s reconversion has included the opening of the Holocaust Memorial in an area under the railway tracks, where mail was once loaded and offloaded and where, between 1943 and 1945, hundreds of deportees, most of them Jewish, were crammed into cattle trucks and transported to death camps (www.memori Other restorations include the prestigious Excelsior Hotel Gallia, a five-star Art Decò property located next to the hotel; the re-opening of the Magazzini Raccordati, five previously abandoned industrial warehouses located under the vaults of the tracks in via Ferrante Aporti which, for the past two years, have been used to host exhibitions and installations during Design Week. In the future, a section of these warehouses will probably be transformed into a food market, like the one found at Rome’s Termini station, while another part could become the permanent headquarters for events and exhibitions. In addition to the redevelopment of the district surrounding the railway hub, plans are also underway to revamp the vast area recently renamed ‘Zona Centrale’. If you want to be hip, head a few kilometes north and explore Nolo (the abbreviation of ‘North of Loreto’, New York style), Milan’s new trendy multicultural area, the favourite haunt of young creative entrepreneurs. www.milanocen
