In keeping with tradition, the San Carlo Opera House, will once again be staging Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, the world’s favourite Christmas ballet and the ultimate family adventure. This year’s production at Teatro San Carlo will be directed by Lienz Chang, based on the original version by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Inspired by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s 1816 fairytale ‘ The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’, ‘ The Nutcracker’ was premiered in St. Petersburg on 18 December 1892, but sadly turned out to be a flop. Set at the beginning of the 19th century, the ballet takes place on Christmas Eve and tells the story of a little girl named Clara and her fantasyfilled adventures in the company of Prince Nutcracker, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the evil rats governed by the Mouse king. Drosselmeyer, Clara and Fritz’s godfather sings the watchmaker’s song to the two children who fall asleep while waiting to open their presents. The many gifts that they receive include a Tin Soldier and a Nutcracker. The Nutcracker, in particular, becomes the hit of the party. When Clara begins playing with it she hears some strange squeaking in the room: the squeaking of Mice. All the toys come to life and start fighting the invaders. The Nutcracker, who leads his army of toy soldiers into battle, defeats the enemy and carries Clara faraway on his horse. This marks the beginning of a magical journey. On stage, the prima ballerinas, the soloists and the Corps de Ballet of the Neapolitan Opera House, with the participation of the students of the San Carlo Ballet School. The orchestra is conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu. Scenery by Nicola Rubertelli with costumes by Giusi Giustino. Teatro San Carlo. Via San Carlo, 98, Naples.
