Robert Glasper, one of the most avant-garde jazz composers, is set to enthrall audiences at Teatro Bellini, accompanied by the Robert Glasper Experiment ensemble
How to enjoy your stay in Naples and on the Coast & Islands
Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist and a record producer. Born in 1978, in Houston, Texas, following the release of his first albums, including ‘Mood’ (2004) and ‘Canvas’ (2005), he also dabbled in Funk. However, it was with ‘Black Radio', released in 2012, that he sought to blur the boundaries between jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and rock & roll; it entered the jazz charts at number one and went on to win a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The record has the advantage of introducing young, hip-hop enthusiasts to jazz and, vice-versa, and encouraging hardcore jazz fans to embrace its more contemporary sounds. ‘Black Radio’ was followed by ‘Black Radio 2’, which Robert released under the name ‘Robert Glasper Experiment’, the ensemble with which he will perform at Teatro Bellini on 26 April, a line-up consisting of Casey Benjaminal on sax, Derrick Hodge on bass and Mark Colenburg on drums. ‘Black Radio 2’ also won a Grammy Award which definitively catapulted Robert Glasper into the Olympus of the most avantgarde jazz composers, due to his ability to blend acoustics and street language with electronics and sophisticated music. Glasper recently completed the soundtrack for ‘Miles Ahead’, a film about the life of Miles Davis released in October 2015 at cinemas across the U.S. Robert Glasper Experiment is presented as part of Synth, the event organized by Village Blues in collaboration with Teatro Bellini and Drop. Designed as a showcase for the most interesting elements of digital art, electronic music and research, Synth’s aim is to include Naples in the international festival circuit which already features Turin with ‘C2’ and Bologna with ‘Robot’.
