CER­TOSA DI SAN MARTINO - Ly­ing atop a hill in the Vomero dis­trict, the for­mer monastery dom­i­nates the en­tire Gulf of Naples. Founded in 1325 by Charles of An­jou, Duke of Cal­abria, over the cen­turies the Char­ter House was en­riched by a num­ber of im­pres­sive arte­facts in­clud­ing mar­bles, fres­coes, sculp­tures, fur­nish­ings and paint­ings. A na­tional mon­u­ment since 1866, it houses the Na­tional Mu­seum of San Martino, fea­tur­ing a large dis­play of “pre­sepi” or na­tiv­ity scenes by masters of the Neapoli­tan school. Make sure to visit its three­tiered gar­dens and clois­ters, the largest of which is con­sid­ered to be one of the finest in Italy. Open Thurs-Tues 8.30am-6.30pm – Largo S. MEDITER­RANEAN MU­SEUM OF ART, MU­SIC AND TRA­DI­TIONS - The Museo Mediter­ra­neo dell’Arte, della Mu­sica e delle Tradizioni (MAMT) cel­e­brates the cul­ture of 43 Mediter­ranean cul­tures by way of im­ages, ob­jects and orig­i­nal doc­u­ments pro­vided by their Heads of State and Gov­ern­ments. Five floors of ex­hibits, pho­to­graphs and paint­ings; an area ded­i­cated to the daily prayers of Chris­tians, Mus­lims and Jews; a li­brary; a news­pa­per li­brary and a mu­sic hall ded­i­cated to Neapoli­tan artists Peppe and Con­cetta Barra.
