How did you find the Museum on your arrival?

Although the Mann was already an important reference point, it seemed to be cut off from the rest of the city. We extended its presence abroad with the ‘Mann in the world’ project, involving roughly 20 exhibitions a year at major cultural venues across the world, from New York to Tokyo, from Europe to South America, a unique opportunity to increase the Museum’s budget and export a positive image of Naples.

How many visitors do you get at Mann each year? Can you give us a demographic profile?

In 2015, we welcomed 364,000 visitors; we are counting on doubling this figure at the end of my mandate. The average visitor is foreign and cultured. The Museum is also attended by numerous students from all over Italy. We have to work on increasing the number of young attendees and exploiting the advent of new arrivals from countries, like China, that are beginning to become interested in tourism.

How are you planning on attracting young people?

By enhancing social tools, with online photographic competitions, a new website which is scheduled to be completed at the end of May, late-night openings featuring interesting themes and offers, social gatherings and exhibitions dealing with contemporary subjects like the ones currently on exhibit, i.e. ‘Myth and Nature’ and ‘Days of Future Past’, by Adrian Tranquilli. Furthermore, we are calling attention to the Museum at strategic points across the city; we are participating at fairs and promoting initiatives that also involve the Municipality and the Regional Government.

What do you think of Naples?

Naples is a breeding ground of culture, boasting a wealth of opportunities in the fields of art, culture and enogastronomy. It is a captivating setting for movie makers. A noble, welcoming city, that is aware of its past splendour. It is necessary to condense these ‘spurts of culture’ into a single, well-defined flow of energy in order to emphasize the positive aspects of the city and free ourselves of clichéd stereotypes.
