‘Arcipelago Italia' is the title of the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale. Its curator, Mario Cucinella, has created a thought-provoking itinerary inviting the public to look at several areas of Italy, which though forgotten and marginalized, nevertheless have the potential to withstand the country's social and political disintegration. Eight itineraries and eight contemporary architecture projects feature historic towns, roads, landscapes and nature reserves: parts of the country that are less well-known but beautiful and well-worth discovering. The pavilion showcases several contemporary architecture projects designed for inhabited areas that are far-removed from major centres, yet are able to reacquire centrality in the dialogue between new needs, layers of history and landscapes. The presentation, at the evocative structure of the Arsenale, is both captivating and engaging. Before embarking on this tour of Italy, take the opportunity to watch the documentary “L’altro spazio” which describes this trip through the inland territories in search of the roots of both the material and immaterial knowledge found in Italy's history and geography. www.labiennale.org
