UWI welcomes Harbour View to Bowl

The University of the West Indies (UWI) and harbour View FC will hunt their first points of the season as they clash in a rescheduled Red Stripe Premier League match at the UWI Bowl starting at 3:30 pm today.

On Sunday, the game was called off because of a waterlogged field caused by the persistent rainfall.

However that was the only game affected over the weekend that saw newcomers Mount Pleasant Football Academy announce themselves to top-flight football with a dramatic 2-1 win over champions Portmore United.

The other promoted team Dunbeholden FC was not so lucky as they went down 0-1 to Waterhouse FC in a game where they more than held their own.

Former champions Arnett Gardens opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Humble Lion; Cavalier SC blanked FC Reno 2-0, and Montego Bay United crashed 0-2 at home to Tivoli Gardens.

Both UWI and Harbour View will be eager to kick-start their campaigns with maximum points and it should be an interesting encounter at the Bowl.

Harbour View have lost the promising striker Daniel Green to Mount Pleasant after a breakthrough year culminating with his selection to the national team. The ‘Stars of the East’ also lost defender Kareem Manning and the much-travelled midfielder Evan Taylor, also to the St Ann club.

National defender Javain Brown is off on scholarship, but they acquired Johann Weatherley from Montego Bay United; Elton Thompson from Tivoli Gardens; Timar Lewis from Sandals South Coast FC; Bebeto Mcdonald from Boys’ Town and Mark Alves from Constant Spring.

The UWI also suffered in the transfer market, losing veterans Kaemmar Daley and Girvon Brown to Waterhouse and it is left to see how they cope as they turn their attention to mostly university students.

Under new head coach Andrew Peart, The UWI have brought in Davian Shakes and Trey Bennett, two key members of Kingston College’s team from Santos and Arnett Gardens, respectively.

Of note, the UWI will remain a formidable unit after retaining the spine of team in goalkeeper Amal Knight, Fabion Mccarthy and Ryan Miller.
