LET’S RESOLVE CONFLICTS

-

In transitioning to a new class or a new school, it is important that children be equipped with conflict resolution skills that will help them to navigate day-to-day interactions.

Here are some tips that can help children to resolve conflicts in a healthy way:

1. Explain to your children that strong emotions such as anger and frustration are normal; however, they must express these feelings in acceptable ways that will not harm themselves or others. Encourage them to breathe deeply, count to ten or engage in an activity they find relaxing. 2. Encourage your children to name their feelings and what caused them to feel that way. Help them to find solutions to the issues they may be having at home or at school. It is also important to teach them to listen to others and be willing to apologise when they are wrong. 3. Give your children time to calm down. Managing emotions, especially at a young age, can be very difficult. Having some time undisturbed will help your children to compose themselves. 4. Encourage your children to act fairly when dealing with others. Let them know that they cannot always have things their way. Show them how to talk about their feelings and explain what caused them to feel that way. Let them know that they also have to consider the feelings of others. 5. Role-play ideal responses to various situations with your children. They will not always get it right, but effort should be commended. 6. Encourage your children to share their problems with an adult they trust, especially if they cannot handle the situation on their own.
