Mary Jane gets make over
EMERGING reggae artiste Stanpipe has teamed up with Rastafarian singjay Sizzla for the remix of Marijuana (Mary Jane).
The single is an ode to marijuana (ganja). “I recorded the song and then I took it to Sizzla and he loved it. We decided to do a remix,” Stanpipe told the Jamaica Observer.
Marijuana (Mary Jane) was produced by Stanpipe Music.
“The feedback has been tremendous. It’s getting a lot of love on some radio stations in England, so we decided to get the song out to the streets in Jamaica, so we have Stampede doing the promotions,” said Stanpipe.
Stanpipe is originally from the Standpipe area of Kingston. Born Robert Chin, he migrated to Florida several years ago. He has been doing music professionally since 1997.
He recently performed at the Herb & Music West Coast Tour where he opened for singer Yvad. However, he had to cut the tour short due to the passing of his mother, restaurateur Minion “Sister Minnie” Phillips.
“I have been back in Jamaica to be with my family. My mother was my hero and my teacher. I am proud to call Sister Minnie my mother,” said Stanpipe.
His father, Leroy Chin, is founder and owner of the Sons Junior International sound system in Brooklyn, New York, which played a vital role in exposing Stanpipe to the hardcore dancehall crowd.
His first single Tell Him No was recorded at Sons Junior International Recording Studios in New York and following its success, he released Mirjam which gave him some recognition. His other recordings include Ghetto Youths (featuring Natty Remo) and Can’t Stop Loving You (featuring Freddie Mcgregor).
He has worked with producers including Ed Robinson, Paul Henton, and I Paul.
