Gaynstead crush Dunoon in ISSA Urban High School Girls netball

- BY GERALD REID

GAYNSTEAD High registered two crushing wins against Dunoon Technical High in the 2018 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Urban High School Girls Junior and Senior Leagues at Dunoon Technical School court on Wednesday.

Gaynstead, who lost the Junior League final to St Catherine High last year, scored a convincing 54-1 win over Dunoon Technical in junior action.

In another crushing blow for the home team, they were beaten 73-5 by Gaynstead in Senior League encounter.

Dalton Hinds, coach of Gaynstead, said he was happy for the win in both sections, and due to the wide margins he was able to give the reserve players minutes on the court.

“The players executed very well, especially the shooters of both teams who outshot their opponents from in the first quarter to set the stage for a big win,” Hinds said.

A past student of Dunoon, Hinds added that the losers might have been in awe of the skills of Gaynstead’s players, but he believes that should get better as the competition progresses.

Meanwhile, Kenardo Wright, coach of Dunoon, lamented the fact that he has had just one month coaching the girls.

“Some of the girls are playing for the first time but they will get the experience. As the competition progresses, I think the girls will get better and better, but first we have to go back to the drawing board and get prepared for our next match,” said Wright, who was the coach of Donald Quarrie High last year.

The quarterly scores in junior action were 19-0, 33-0 at half-time, and 44-0. Dunoon netted their lone goal in the final quarter.

Shooters Britney Logan and Kelsey Jonas gave their team a 20-2 lead in the first quarter in the Senior League encounter. They netted a further 18-1 goals to increase their lead to 38-3 at the half-time break.

Dunoon were completely outplayed in all departments, as Gaynstead led 59-4 at the end of the third quarter before running out easy winners.
