Nathi Prince bats for knowledge
REGGAE singer Nathi Prince is upset about the content of the music coming out of Jamaica. He has taken aim at the new slang ‘fully dunce’ which has gained popularity in dancehall circles.
“How can we endorse being dunce? It start becoming a hip ting, a swaggy thing to be dunce. ‘Mi dunce thug nuh ramp fi lick out yu head’ . Education is something that the patriots before us fought for...the oppressors never wanted black people to be educated, there has to be a reason, just think about it. There is power in the word and tongue, how can we endorse something that is so poisonous to our future as a black race,” he said.
“Money is not all, power to an uneducated fool is worthless. When you say yuh dunce, it is not fun, it is nothing to be swaggy, it is not cool, you are just encouraging youths in the school that we don’t need education, who may say ‘this artiste is doing good based on what he is doing and he is dunce so why bother?’. That is dangerous and defeatist thinking; It is not cool to be dunce,” said Nathi Prince.
Nathi Prince is currently working on a yet-to-be-titled seven-song EP which will be released and distributed early 2019.
“My EP will tell the story of my journey. My name keeps me grounded, mi just keep focussed on the Most High, knowing that He is with me, it eradicates fear, I know I am not alone when I hit the stage because I am coming with a message cause God is with me,” he said.
According to him, its tracklisting will include songs Better Days and The Most High.
Nathi Prince (given name Trevor Boyd) grew up in the Spanish Town where he started his secondary education at Jose Marti High and then graduated from St
Jago High.
He attended the University of Technology Jamaica where he started to read for a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacology, but discontinued the programme when he migrated to the USA in the early 2000s. He decided to pursue his musical passion.
He has performed at several community stage shows in Jamaica and club shows in the USA.
His other songs include Resolution, and Protection.
“As an artiste, I feel an awesome responsibility to bring a message of positivity, enlightenment and knowledge through music, the people need to make up their minds what sort of society they want to live in, and I am doing my part to light a candle in the darkness,” Nathi Prince added.
