Arnett rebound with 3-1 win over newcomers Dunbeholden
Arnett Gardens 3 Reid (20th, 80th), Morgan (45th) 1
AFTER being held to two consecutive stalemates, former champions Arnett Gardens returned to winning ways in fine fashion as they got by Dunbeholden FC 3-1 in the Red Stripe Premier League encounter at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.
It was a more clinical display from the “Junglists” who were led by a brace from Fabian Reid (20th and 80th minutes), while Captain Marvin Morgan (45th) got the other before being forced off the field with an injury.
Kemone Gayle grabbed a consolation for Dunbeholden FC in 90+2 minutes.
With the win, Arnett Gardens regained their position in the top half of the table, jumping to fourth on 14 points, while the promoted Dunbeholden FC have slipped to the foot of the 12-team standing on seven points.
Winning coach Eugene Williams, standing in for Head Coach Jerome Waite who is away on national duties, welcomed the turn around.
“I am very pleased that we won today (yesterday)... we definitely needed this because we played a beautiful game on Monday night and had to settle for a draw, so today’s performance was basically a carry over from that game and I am happy that we got some goals today,” Williams told the Jamaica Observer in a postgame interview.
Despite being forced into two substitutions due to injury, Williams is not too concerned, pointing out that they have “good replacements” waiting in the wings.
Vishinul Harris, who was introduced in the 74th minute, had to be replaced 10 minutes later with a hamstring niggle.
M e a n w h i l e , A n d r e w Fraser, assistant coach at Dunbeholden, is banking on his team to bounce back and pluck themselves from the relegation zone.
“Obviously we are disappointed because you never like to lose at home, but such is the nature of the game,” he said.
It was not the best of start from the teams as they lacked conviction in the early exchanges, but Arnett Gardens started to show some enterprise as the game progressed and later found the go-ahead goal when Reid slotted home.
Arnett Gardens continued to dictate terms and enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure well past the hour mark, but failed to add to their tally at that point.
They eventually extended the lead on the stroke of half-time when Morgan, who was left unmarked at the far post, headed home a weighted cross from Rickardo Oldham to put Arnett Gardens 2-0 up at the break.
Unlike what they did in the first half, Arnett Gardens wasted little time in pressing Dunbeholden on the resumption, but failed to take full advantage of their dominance in possession and had to wait until the 80th minute to push further ahead.
A goalkeeping error on the part of Dunbeholden’s Giovanni Smith allowed Arnett Gardens a quick throw-in which Reid received, then skipped a defender and fired home.
But Dunbeholden refused to throw in the towel and found a consolation in time added when Gayle’s 25-yard free kick deflected off Ranike Anderson and lodged into the top right hand corner of the goal, leaving custodian Damion Hyatt flat-footed.
