Tak­ing a sam­ple from Buju

To­mor­row, Buju Ban­ton is set to be re­leased from fed­eral prison in Ge­or­gia. He has been in­car­cer­ated in the United States since 2010 for a drug-re­lated crime. Lead­ing up to his re­lease, the Ja­maica Ob­server presents a daily fea­ture on what has tran­spired in that time with mem­bers of his fam­ily, friends and col­leagues.

Anum­ber of artistes have sam­pled or cov­ered songs from Buju Ban­ton’s ex­ten­sive cat­a­logue in the past seven years. This is usu­ally a nod to the qual­ity of an artiste’s work.

His 1994 hit Cham­pion was sam­pled by pop singer Se­lena Gomez on her 2013 sin­gle Like A Cham­pion.

The track was fea­tured on her de­but al­bum Stars

Dance, which topped the Bill­board 200 Al­bums

Chart and sold 1.2 mil­lion copies in the United


Cham­pion is Buju Ban­ton’s big­gest hit in the

US, peak­ing at num­ber 67 on the Bill­board

R&B Hip-hop Songs chart in 1995. It is on his

1995 al­bum, ‘Til Shiloh.

Bonafide Love, a 1992 hit for Ban­ton and

Wayne Won­der was sam­pled in Amor Real, a 2013 song by Latin rap­per Go­cho fea­tur­ing


Ban­ton’s 1993 col­lab­o­ra­tion with Na­dine

Suther­land, Wicked Dickie, pro­duced by

Dono­van Ger­main, was sam­pled last year in

Ma­jor Lazer’s Go Dung fea­tur­ing KES. It is from the EDM king­pins’ EP Know no Bet­ter which topped the Bill­board Reg­gae Chart.

Love Dem Bad, a 1997 hit for Ban­ton and Red

Rat, was sam­pled in 2013 by rap­per Robb Bank$ in his song Flex (City). Me and Oonu, a 2006 record­ing by Ban­ton, was last year sam­pled by

Damian Marley for the song R.O.A.R.

In 2015, reg­gae singer Tiken Jah Fakoly of Cote D’ivoire cov­ered Hills and Val­leys.
