Taking a sample from Buju
Tomorrow, Buju Banton is set to be released from federal prison in Georgia. He has been incarcerated in the United States since 2010 for a drug-related crime. Leading up to his release, the Jamaica Observer presents a daily feature on what has transpired in that time with members of his family, friends and colleagues.
Anumber of artistes have sampled or covered songs from Buju Banton’s extensive catalogue in the past seven years. This is usually a nod to the quality of an artiste’s work.
His 1994 hit Champion was sampled by pop singer Selena Gomez on her 2013 single Like A Champion.
The track was featured on her debut album Stars
Dance, which topped the Billboard 200 Albums
Chart and sold 1.2 million copies in the United
Champion is Buju Banton’s biggest hit in the
US, peaking at number 67 on the Billboard
R&B Hip-hop Songs chart in 1995. It is on his
1995 album, ‘Til Shiloh.
Bonafide Love, a 1992 hit for Banton and
Wayne Wonder was sampled in Amor Real, a 2013 song by Latin rapper Gocho featuring
Banton’s 1993 collaboration with Nadine
Sutherland, Wicked Dickie, produced by
Donovan Germain, was sampled last year in
Major Lazer’s Go Dung featuring KES. It is from the EDM kingpins’ EP Know no Better which topped the Billboard Reggae Chart.
Love Dem Bad, a 1997 hit for Banton and Red
Rat, was sampled in 2013 by rapper Robb Bank$ in his song Flex (City). Me and Oonu, a 2006 recording by Banton, was last year sampled by
Damian Marley for the song R.O.A.R.
Hills and Valleys was a monster hit in
1998 for Banton. It is from his album Inna
Heights, the long-awaited follow-up to ‘Til
In 2015, reggae singer Tiken Jah Fakoly of Cote D’ivoire covered Hills and Valleys.
Canadian duo Shad and DJ T Lo sampled
Banton’s Til I’m Laid to Rest in their song
Always Winnin, released in 2014. Til I’m Laid to
