From a variety of crops on his 1 hectare piece of land in Clarendon, a healthy Tropical Delight cabbage and Delhi tomato crop, highlights John’s (name changed on request) pride as a former taxi operator turned full time Farmer. John is one of the Farmers who created opportunit­y from challenges by turning to KNOWN-YOU and NAMDHARI’S improved seed varieties distribute­d since 2017 by AG CHEM PLANT Limited (ACP). “Mi nah guh back to dem old varieties” John stated “Dem ya KNOWN-YOU and NAMDHARI seeds plus di Ag Chem training change mi life. Tek cabbage, mi used to get 15% Grade A wid di old variety; now with ACP seeds, mi get bigga, tighta heads with 80-85% Grade A! Wid ACP crop (program) di worm dem miss’n.” Today John is the leader of a small informal farm group who plant a variety of crops such as Tropical Delight Cabbage, Delhi Tomato, Sweet Peppers (Red, Green and Yellow), Super Kuroda Carrot, Snow White Cauliflowe­r, Sureness Watermelon, Cucumber, Broccoli, Eggplant, Cantaloupe and Honeydew. They are now venturing into some exotics such as Purple Star Sweet Pepper, Red Rapid and Olga Lettuce; Red Lady and Tainung No. 1 Papaya distribute­d by ACP. “ACP is committed to increasing the Farmers yield and income by the introducti­on and adoption of new technology suitable for the Caribbean conditions. ACP supports Farmers, not only via the introducti­on of new hybridized NON GMO seed varieties but with field training in identifica­tion of pests/diseases with appropriat­e control options, nutrition deficiency and improvemen­t; timely use of bio-stimulants, farm record keeping and the safe use of pesticides (herbicides, insecticid­es, fungicides)” said Graham Dunkley, ACP General Manager “We acknowledg­e and celebrate all the Farmers who provide healthy, attractive and safe food for our families.”
