A toast to Magnum

- BY KEVIN JACKSON Observer Writer

MAGNUM Tonic Wine celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The popular drink has been associated with Jamaica’s entertainment industry since its entry into the marketplace.

Telecia Lindo-johnson, marketing manager at Wray & Nephew Limited, manufacturers and distributors of Magnum, said the brand has had significant accomplishments over the years.

“Magnum is the best-selling tonic wine in Jamaica with a substantial presence throughout the island. We first launched at the Cactus Nightclub in Portmore.

Then in 2003, we were the first title sponsor for Sting. In 2007, we partnered with Stone Love sound system, and in 2008, we had our first-ever Magnum Kings & Queens of The Dancehall competition. We signed Ding Dong as brand ambassador in 2017 and in 2018 we launched Magnum Xplosion, a series of concerts across the Caribbean,” she said.

A televised talent show, Magnum Kings & Queens of The Dancehall ran for several seasons and was wildly popular, but sponsors cancelled it after the 2018 season. According to Lindo Johnson, the company believed it was time to move on to other ventures.

“Magnum transitioned to a global platform that offers curated dancehall content and an opportunity for more types of talents to be showcased via Magnumhub.tv,” she explained.

Early this year, Jussbuss TV teamed with Magnum to produce content for its new entertainment website, magnumhub.tv, which is a source for the latest reggae and dancehall news, as well as tidbits on dancehall lifestyle and culture.

“The association between Jussbuss TV and Magnum has been synergistic, as we want to help take the music and film industry to that next level and aligning our incentives perfectly,” said Johnathan Newman, Jussbuss TV’S company director and film producer.

Lindo-johnson commented on the website’s progress.

“Magnumhub.tv is still new and growing. However, we are pleased with the response to the hub and the potential to engage creatives in Jamaica to showcase their work to the world,” she said.

Some participants from the Magnum Kings &

Queens of The Dancehall series have enjoyed mainstream success. They include Specialist, Jah Bouks, Tanto Blacks, Deep Jahi, Chozenn, and Grammy nominee Devin Di Dakta.

Details for Magnum’s 20th anniversary celebrations are expected to be announced during a media function this evening at Mas Camp in St Andrew.
