JC sting Wolmer’s with late equaliser
With only six minutes of normal time plus time added left to complete their game against Wolmer’s Boys’, tajay Grant scored for Jamaica College (JC) to eke out a crucial 2-2 result in yesterday’s issa/digicel Manning Cup contest.
Grant’s goal came in the 88th minute, just four minutes after the resumption in the rescheduled fixture.
It was a most important result for JC as it kept them atop Group E with 29 points from 11 games. Wolmer’s Boys’ are second with 27 heading into their final set of games.
With teams getting seeding points for each victory and extra points for topping the group which would enhance their ranking for the second round, Wolmer’s Boys’ might live to regret not holding on for the win.
On September 16, Wolmer’s were leading 2-1 before lightning strikes brought an abrupt end to the game in the 84th minute. Some players on both sides sustained injuries by the strikes and were taken to hospital.
Alex Thomas, the head coach of Wolmer’s Boys’, told the Jamaica Observer that his players made a mistake.
“We would have loved to win it and come out on top for a confidence-booster for the players, but they realise all is not lost as we still go through. They were a bit disappointed, but they understand going forward,” said Thomas.
“We planned for the six minutes but JC got a long ball and two of our defenders got caught. But they are young and learning the game. They won’t make this mistake going forward. Better they make this mistake now than later,” he pointed out.
In another rescheduled game, Pembroke Hall failed to show for the remaining 30 minutes of their match against Kingston College (KC) who had led 7-0 when it was blown off.
KC were peeved at receiving the three points and a threegoal winning margin that moved them to 30 points from 10 games. They top Group G and are 15 points ahead of second-placed Excelsior High, who have three games in hand. Kingston Technical are third with nine points, also from seven games.
St George’s College defeated Norman Manley High 3-1 and consolidated top spot in Group F with 28 points from 10 games. Calabar blanked Campion College 2-0 and finished third with 16 points, three adrift of second-placed Eltham High.
In Group D, Hydel High beat Edith Dalton James 2-0
to move to 22 points, two behind second-placed Mona High. But Hydel have a game in hand and can sneak into second spot. Camperdown, with 36 points, are group winners.
St Catherine High blanked Penwood High 3-0 and secured their spot in the second round after moving to 22 points, four ahead of third-placed Papine High, who have one game remaining. St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), on 28 points, have won Group C.
