The Mona School of Business Mourns Greta Bogues

The Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) community continues to mourn the passing of Ms Greta Bogues former MSBM Board and Finance Committee Member and alumnus who passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2021.

It is hard to find suitable words to pay a tribute to this truly remarkable friend and supporter of MSBM and by extension The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

Greta served with distinction as a Board Member and member of the Finance Committee of the then Mona School of Business (MSB) where she brought her wealth of experience in the world of business to bear on the deliberations of the Board and made a valuable contribution to School’s development. A stalwart in the private sector and a leading figure in the field of corporate governance, she is remembered for being well organized, focused, thorough and committed to excellence.

Her focus on excellence and being her best also extended to others as she had a strong desire to mentor and nurture young people.

She recognized the need to ensure that her skills and experiences were shared and passed on to others and so she spent long hours training and guiding in the knowledge and craft of good corporate governance.

She had a special place in her heart for MSBM and when the newly formed Corporate Governance Index Review Committee (CGIRC) was convened, she insisted that academia be well represented on that committee and in her mind, academia meant The University of the West Indies and MSBM in particular. In that regard she recruited two recent graduates from the MBA programme to be analysts and as the workload increased in subsequent years, she also sought to recruit two additional graduates from MSBM and also included a member of faculty from MSBM.

In addition, to the strong MSBM presence on the CGIRC, whenever the opportunity for an intern arose Greta would always ask if there was an MSBM graduate student that was available.

Her passion for her work in Corporate Governance both in the public and private sectors was unmatched only by her desire to genuinely train, and mentor the next generation of advocates for corporate governance.

Greta Bogues has made an indelible mark in the history of the business sector in Jamaica and of Mona School of Business and Management. She will be missed by many in our society, but MSBM has lost a strong advocate for our graduate students.

While we mourn her passing, our thoughts and prayers are with her family and colleagues during this difficult time.
