Jamaican Nia Robinson bags athlete of the week award

Former Jamaican junior representa­tive Nia robinson was named the National Junior College Athletics Associatio­n (NJCAA) female field event athlete of the week on Tuesday after she won all three jumps events at the region VI Championsh­ips at Broncbuste­r Stadium, Garden City, Kansas.

The former Rusea’s High standout, who attends Barton County College, was getting the award for the second time as she retained her titles in the high and long jumps, while winnng the triple jump after placing second last year.

Robinson, who is commited to attending the University of South Florida next year, achieved a personal best 1.80m in the high jump, tied 13th all time in the NJCAA and won both horizontal jumps with wind-aided performanc­es.

She needed just one atempt to win the long jump, landing at 6.40m (4.4m/s), the longest effort in the NJCAA this year and tying for the 10th best performanc­e all time under any conditions.

She jumped 12.87m (5.9m/s) to take the triple jump but she owns the year’s outdoor legal best at 12.77m.

Robinson was one of 14 winners at last weekend’s NJCAA Region VI and XI Regional Championsh­ips with Tirecia Walcott and Dyandra Gray of Iowa Western CC both being double winners in Region XI which was hosted in Council Bluffs in Iowa.

Former Calabar High athlete Andrew Betton of Cloud County College retained the decathlon, scoring a personal best 6,497 points.

Another former Calabar athlete, Odayne Harris of Highland CC, won the javelin with 61.36m, while former Petersfiel­d High thrower, Jazmyn James, also of Highland CC, won the women’s discus throw with 43.99m and Brandon Lloyd of Barton CC won the men’s shot put with 18.15m.

Lloyd the former Clarendon College athlete, who had thrown a personal best and Barton school record 58.61m a few weeks earlier, was third in the men’s discus with 47.52m while former Jamaica College athlete Chris Brown of Highland was fourth with 47.03m.

Lashana Graham of Barton CC retained her women’s 400m hurdles title running 59.18 seconds and was second in the 400m with 57.19 seconds as Kayan Green of Barton also retained her 800m title with 2:15.04 seconds.

Danae Nembhard of Barton CC was second in the 100m hurdles with a windy 13.44 seconds (5.9m/s).

Three Jamaicans from Highland CC finished second, third and fourth in the women’s shot put – Shakera Williams, 13.70m; Jazmyn James, 13.48m; and Santornya Ralliford, 13.28m.

Cloud County was second to Robinson in the triple jump with a wind-aided 12.15m (5.3m/s); Dayjahney Hibbert of Highland CC was second in the high jump with 1.62m while Barton County’s Brittania Ingram was fifth in the long jump with a wind-aided 5.59m (2.8m/s) while Irving was sixth with a wind-aided 5.53 (4.1m/s).

In the Region X1 championsh­ips Walcott took the women’s sprint double, running 11.67 seconds (0.5m/s) to win the 100m and 23.93 (0.9m/) to take the 200m after she had run a personal best 23.75 seconds (1.8m/s) to lead the qualifying.

Former Queen’s School runner Britney Brown of Iowa Central, who was third in the 200m in 24.83 seconds, won the 400m in 55.10 seconds beating former Holmwood Technical’s Daniella Deer of Iowa Western who ran 55.97 seconds.

Iowa Western’s Gray took the women’s hurdles double, winning the 100m in 13.92 seconds (1.7m/s) and the 400m hurdles with 1:02.86 seconds.

Former Kingston College runner D’andre Anderson won the men’s 400m in 46.90 seconds, just edging out his Iowa Western teammate Tahj Hamm who ran 46.91 seconds.

Rivaldo Marshall of Indian Hills CC won the men’s 800m in 1:50.72 seconds; Michael Buchanan of Iowa Western won the men’s long jump with a wind-aided 7.58m (3.8m/s); former Kingston College thrower Nemoy Cockett of Iowa Western won the men’s hammer throw with a personal best 54.32m with his teammate Shakiel Dacres, formerly of Jamaica College, placing seventh with 35.61m.

Dacres was third in the discus throw with 49.18m and fifth in the shot put with 14.51m while Cockett was seventh with 12.36m and third in the javelin with 44.69m.

Former Rusea’s High thrower Cheyanne Fearon of Iowa Western won the women’s discus throw with 41.93m, was third in the hammer throw with 41.01m and fifth in the shot put with 11.55m.

Former St Elizabeth Technical athlete Alliyah Mcneil of Iowa Western had two second-place finishes in the long jump with 6.25m (1.8m/s) and high jump with 1.75m.

Shamar Brown, formerly of Garvey Maceo and now at Iowa Western, was third in the men’s 400m hurdles with 54.35 seconds.
