Gov’t not heeding our advice?

-

Dear Editor,

It has been said that we ought to put into practice what we read. The Government of Jamaica has received thousands of letters in the newspapers on crime, telling it to punish criminals of violent crimes severely.

But, until now, it has failed to put the advice given in these letters, pertaining to drastic punishment to wrongdoers and crime, into practice.

The relevant authorities have made, and are making, a grave mistake by refusing to punish all wrongdoers in the right and proper way, or by not going the extra mile in castigation.

The relevant authorities need to take a leaf out of wise King Solomon’s book and realise that the old criminal laws are not working and change the constitution in the areas that may turn the tables to provide significant results in putting an end to the high murder rate caused by these ‘gunbwoys’, ‘knifemongers’, and machete wielders in this bloodstained society.

We don’t seem to place a high value on life in Jamaica, and we don’t seem to be frightened or concerned that more than 1,000 of our people have been dying senselessly each year, for decades.

Are we a people without compassion? We seem to place more value on and are more concerned about the mighty dollar than on safeguarding the lives of our people who continue to die like flies in this criminal-controlled island.

What are you waiting on? A man pulled a gun and ended an innocent life; put him in prison for 60 years. A heartless beast butchers a woman with a knife or a machete; give the bugger a life sentence.

People have been dying brutally for far too long in Jamaica while the Government continues to sentence the murderers and violent criminals at the tip of the iceberg. We will never put a dent in the murder rate until this changes.

Unfortunately, it seems to be a waste of time imploring the Government to punish criminals severely.
