Pryce eagerly plots recovery after horrific injury

- BY ROBERT BAILEY Staff reporter

NATIONAL junior distance runner Samantha Pryce has stepped up her recovery from a broken leg ahead of her move to Benedict College in the United States in January.

The 19-year-old Pryce suffered the horrific injury when she was tripped on the first leg of the final of the Championships of America 4x800m event at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while representing Holmwood Technical on April 29.

Pryce said the recovery process has been going smoothly.

“I think that even though I won’t be ready for January, the coach here at Holmwood and the physiotherapist have been encouraging me and saying that everything will be okay for January,” said Pryce as she gets ready to take up the scholarship to attend Benedict College, located in Columbia, South Carolina.

“They have been giving me a lot of confidence because the recovery has been going good,” she said.

Pryce admitted there is still discomfort in her leg when she runs.

“But everytime I do a little running I might feel a little pain, but not for long, because after I stop running then the pain goes,” he said.

“I have been doing a lot of strength work and it has been going really well. I can see that I am improving because most things that I couldn’t do before, I find myself doing them now,” she pointed out.

Pryce said she had received scholarship offers from other colleges in the United States but decided on Benedict College because the school has been supportive during her recovery.

“Before my injury, I had already signed up every document required for that college even though there are other options out there for me,” she said.

Before the injury Pryce had won the 3000m and the 2000m steeplechase at the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/gracekennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in April.

She also won the 3000m and finished second in the 1500m at the Carifta Games, which was held at the National Stadium a week later, also in April.

She said she misses the track and is eager to get back into the thick of the action.

“I am just anxious to return to the track and continue my career because this is what I enjoyed doing and this is what makes me happy,” Pryce said.
