Cornwall, Irwin through in d’cup Zone A
CORNWALL College and Irwin High secured the two automatic qualifying spots from Zone A of the ISSA/ WATA dacosta Cup football competition with wins over Green Pond High and St James High, respectively, in their return-round games played on Saturday’s rain-affected day.
Twelve-time champions Cornwall College stayed in the lead in Zone A with 20 points after repeating their first-round 3-1 win over Green Pond High, while Irwin High are two points behind with their 2-0 win over St James High.
St Elizabeth Technical High, Cedric Titus High and Tacky High, who could also advance to the second round with wins, had their games affected by heavy rains and/or lightning while Glenmuir High’s march forward was slowed when they were held 1-1 by Central High.
Garvey Maceo High won Zone M after a 3-0 victory over second-placed Vere Technical, to increase their lead to nine points at 19 to 10.
Delano Thompson, Jelani Williams and Devaugn Williams scored for Garvey Maceo who were winning their sixth game of the season.
In Montego Bay, Travis Gordon, Deshaun Talbert from the penalty spot, and substitute Javain Barnes scored for Cornwall College, while Garth-dane Bromwell pulled one back for Green Pond from the penalty spot.
Leo Campbell scored in his fifth-straight game and Nicholus Samuels scored for Irwin High as they ended St James High’s slim hopes of getting one of the two automatic spots.
Defending champions Clarendon College had another goal fest as they hammered Claude Mckay High 15-0 to extend their perfect win record to seven games.
Keheim Dixon lead the way with five goals, Malachi Douglas scored three, while three players got two each from Christopher Hull, Nicholi Forbes and Tedale Williams.
Dinthill Technical are also perfect with five wins after a 7-0 beating of Charlemont High, with two goals each scored by three players — Giovanni Afflick, Gaybriel Anderson, and Tyrese Gowe — while Tameish Richardson scored the other goal.
Black River High moved into joint lead with Manning’s School in Zone D on 13 points after a 2-1 win over Grange Hill.
