Solutions-oriented Mindset
Marcia Erskine was my colleague, and my friend. She leaves behind an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her untimely departure is a profound loss, felt deeply by all who admired her professionalism, exceptional communication skills, journalistic prowess and good advice. She was caring, kind, generous, loved music and dancing, and had a fantastic sense of humour.
Marcia approached every task with a solutions-oriented mindset, navigating challenges with grace and determination. She was savvy and smart and her wit, enthusiastic positivism, and myriad other attributes always left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike.
Marcia and I worked on many events and activities together over the years. She was already working with the UWI Vice Chancellery when I joined. Without my asking, she shared her vast knowledge and acted as my guide and mentor in terms of working with the University’s diverse constituents, partners and external stakeholders, and highlighted the importance of keeping one’s finger on the pulse of all prevailing issues and attitudes. I learned a great deal from her.
I was looking forward to seeing her at this year’s American Foundation for the UWI (AFUWI) Gala on April 18, 2024. Sadly, that is not to be.
As we mourn Marcia’s untimely passing, I know we also celebrate the legacy she leaves behind. Her dedication to excellence, coupled with her unwavering passion for her craft, and distinguished professional reputation continue to serve as a lasting inspiration to us all.
Though she has gone way too soon, her spirit lives on through the countless lives she touched and the invaluable contributions she made to her profession, her family and friends, and her alma mater, the University of the West Indies. Marcia’s memory will forever be cherished, and her absence keenly felt.
