Celebrating a Colleague, Friend, and Vibrant Spirit

- Minna Israel Special Advisor to the Vice Chancellor On Resource Development University of the West Indies

Marcia’s sudden departure has left a profound void in the lives of many, a void that some say will never be filled. She was not just a colleague; she was a cherished friend, an advisor, a confidante, and an unpaid coach, always ready to lend her wisdom and warmth to those around her. Together, we worked closely at the University of the West Indies and with the American Foundation for UWI in New York.

In the world of media communications, Marcia was revered as the epitome of excellence. Her long-standing relationships with clients spoke volumes about her unwavering commitment to their best interests. With a rare blend of fun, caring, and infectious vibrancy, Marcia approached her work, infusing every project with her unique spirit. She never compromised on the high standards she set for herself, navigating her responsibilities with joy and enthusiasm that inspired all who knew her.

Her can-do spirit was palpable, providing a sense of reliability and confidence that everything would be handled with precision and grace. I can still hear her soft voice reassuring me, “Minna, be calm, all will be well.” Beyond her exceptional work ethic, Marcia had a genuine concern for others, ensuring that her services fulfilled every client’s need. Her dedication extended beyond her professional life; Marcia was a true philanthropist, contributing to initiatives like the Women’s Leadership Initiative.

Marcia gave of herself generously, embodying a true spirit of giving. She was our rock, and her absence leaves a void that is deeply felt. But amidst the grief, we choose to celebrate her remarkable life—the life she lived with passion, professionalism, and unwavering care for others.

To her husband Michael, her children Machel and Roshal, her husband Zwade, and her beloved grandchildren Sule and Nyla, we offer our deepest condolences. Though words cannot fully ease the pain of loss, may the knowledge of how deeply Marcia was loved and appreciated bring some comfort during this difficult time. Rest assured, she will always be remembered as a fantastic person, a consummate professional, a caring friend, and a beacon of vibrancy in our lives.

A True Professional… A Trustworthy Colleague… A Treasured Friend… Marcia came to Jamaica in 1978. We met at the Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), as part of the 4th Cohort of Diploma students, which included media persons, like Beverley Sutherland Lewis, Carol Lawes, Jennifer Davies Mcdonald, Claudine Boothe, Gladstone Wilson, Eric Douglas, Errol Lee, Peter Wray, Mark Lee. She always wore that signature smile that endeared her to everyone. In fact, over all these years, I cannot recall ever seeing Marcia with anything but a smile, which often turned to laughter, once our eyes made contact.

Marcia was President of the Public Relations Society of Jamaica (PRSJ) 1989 and 1990. And I had the pleasure of serving on her Executive with others like Teddy Laidley, Jennifer Mcdonald, Janneth Mornan Green, Ivy Reynolds Saulter, Carole Haughton James and Jean Asher. President Marcia was always full of ideas, kept us on our toes, but she made work ‘fun’, was never judgemental or bossy and allowed all ideas to contend. Her leadership skills were impeccable! She truly believed like Gibran, that “Work is love made visible.” As a Past President, she always made herself available to deliver Professional Development Sessions during my tenure and for others, especially on Media Relations, which was her forte. And this was done not only for PRSJ, but also for members of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), to which most of us in the profession subscribed.

Marcia was never too busy to listen if you needed to bounce an idea off her. She was the consummate Public Relations Professional. Every time I hear the Roving Reports on Radio Jamaica during the Morning show, I remember that was Marcia’s brainchild while she was at ICWI. She also came up with some ‘gems’ during her tenure at the National Water Commission (NWC). When the Ward Theatre needed help, she jumped in and assisted me with the PR for fundraising events. And she was always sharing and mentoring a young professional. God gave Marcia many gifts and she shared them freely, not the least of which was her bubbly, warm personality and infectious laughter.

Media, Communication and the Public Relations professions have lost a real treasure and are the poorer for her passing. One thing we can say without a doubt, Marcia made an indelible mark on all with whom she came in contact and certainly left this world a better place. She will continue to live in our hearts and our treasured memories. May she Rest in Hope and Rise in Glory!
