-

IN a world where inclusivity drives progress, investing in women and advocating for gender equality lays the groundwork for a future where all individuals can flourish. This dedication to inclusiveness is deeply rooted at Serge Island Farms Limited, nestled in the heart of St Thomas. With a profound connection to the land and a steadfast commitment to community development, Serge Island Farms continues to invest in the parish of St Thomas through employment, partnerships, sponsorships, and donations, fostering a culture of opportunity and empowerment for all.

We had the privilege of sitting down with Marcia Mcpherson, manager of Serge Island Farm’s Dairy Division, to explore her pivotal role and extraordinary journey in the agricultural industry.

Q: In an industry traditionally dominated by men, such as dairy farming, what is your role at Serge Island Farms, and how do you manage cattle?

MM: Since October 2023, I have been the manager of young stock at Serge Island Farms. In this capacity, I oversee the care and well-being of nine pregnant cows, seven teenagers, and nine young calves, nurturing approximately 2,345 cows from birth. Many of these animals have been under my care since birth, fostering a strong bond and familiarity.

Q: What led you to pursue a career in dairy farming?

MM: Hailing from Hillside Crescent, St Thomas, steps away from Serge Island, my love for animals has been a lifelong passion. As a child, I tended to chickens and pigs. Following my education in agriculture, I applied to Serge Island Farms, and since 2008, I’ve proudly lent my expertise to the farm, marking 18 fulfilling years.

Q: What advice would you offer to women aspiring to enter male-dominated fields like dairy farming?

MM: I wholeheartedly encourage women to pursue careers in agriculture. As a manager in this sector, you wield significant influence and responsibility. It’s about leading by example, ensuring smooth operations, and maintaining a strong presence at all times.

Q: How does it feel to hold such a prominent managerial position?

MM: It’s exhilarating! Leading a team of predominantly male individuals, numbering 20, brings me joy. I relish the opportunity to oversee tasks and delegate responsibilities, embracing the freedom and accountability that accompany the role.
