Men urged to be better allies for women

-

IN a world striving for gender equality, men are being called upon to step up and become better allies for women. With ongoing efforts to dismantle systemic biases and promote inclusivity, the call to action highlights the importance of solidarity and support in the fight for gender equity.

Stephen Price, vice-president and general manager at leading communications and entertainment company Flow Jamaica, made the call while addressing the M’power Women’s Group International Women’s Day Luncheon on March 8 under the theme ‘Inspire Inclusion’.

M’power is a subsidiary of Manpower Maintenance Services (MMS) Group and is dedicated to the “upliftment of women through work and education”.

Recognising the crucial role men play in advancing gender equality, Price urged them to actively engage in fostering environments that empower and uplift women.

“Men can become better allies for women by supporting gender equality and taking actions to address systemic issues of discrimination,” he charged.

Additionally, Price encouraged men to take the time to educate themselves about gender issues and actively listen to women’s voices without interrupting or dismissing them.

“Amplify their voices by sharing their ideas, achievements, and perspectives, especially in male-dominated spaces. Speak out against sexism, and gender stereotypes whenever you encounter them. This includes calling out inappropriate jokes, comments,

and behaviours that perpetuate harmful attitudes towards women,” Price stated.

He further challenged men to support women’s leadership opportunities in workplaces, communities, and other domains and to advocate for gender-balanced representation in decision-making roles.

“Advocate for policies and practices that promote equal opportunities for women in education, employment, and other areas of life. Avoid language or behaviors that reinforce gender stereotypes or contribute to a culture of harassment and discrimination. Be respectful and inclusive in your interactions with women,” Price encouraged.

During the event several employees were presented with certificates following a period of customer service training.

MMS patron and Chairman Audrey Hinchcliffe commended employees and in particular the women for their dedicated service and encouraged them to continue to uphold the MMS standards.
