Be wary of gift-bearing Israelis

-

THE EDITOR, Sir: I HAVE seen where the Israeli government, through its ambassador to Jamaica, Bahij Mansour, has stated its intention of becoming deeply involved in assisting Jamaican policymakers to plan and implement the Jamaican global hub.

This is great news. With Israel on board, the whole thing is looking more and more feasible. The Israelis don’t play around with development. After the tragedy of the Holocaust, they have set to developing their sliver of land into a technological Garden of Eden, almost self-sufficient in food production, and a leading country in utilising the sun for energy.

It seems a pity, however, that someone has to come to Jamaica to say, “Lift your eyes to the heavens, what do you see? The sun.” Anyway, humour aside, green energy should be far more utilised in Jamaica.

However, the devil, they say, loves to hide in the details. Jamaica has habitually voted pro- Palestine and, therefore, against Israeli interests at the United Nations, though we are, prima facie, an ally of Israel. Israel feels entitled to the land as the Bible records that Yahweh promised them this location for services rendered to the Elohim.

Be that as it may, we are a Christian nation, striving to live by the moral precepts outlined by Jesus in the Gospels. We can privately express to the Israelis our concern for the Palestinians during the occupation, but the relationship with Israel will be endangered if we continue to vote pro-Palestine at the UN.
