Happy Shelly gets Key to the City in Mobay
OLYMPIC CHAMPION Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce received the Key to the city of Montego Bay at the 36th Milo Western Relays at the Montego Bay Sports Complex last Saturday.
The Key to the City was presented by Montego Bay Mayor Glendon Harris, and Fraser-Pryce was cited for her extraordinary performances in international track and field which resulted in her winning back-to-back Olympic 100m gold medals at Beijing (2008) and London (2012) and the sprint double at last year’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow.
Pryce said the occasion meant a great deal to her.
“I am still in awe, really,” she told reporters. “It’s something I have to thank God for, and I have worked really hard ... . I am overwhelmed and happy that the mayor has decided to bestow such an honour on me. It’s very pleasing to be given the Key to the City of Montego Bay.”
“I am glad to know I can give such hope to young people, because I do understand what it means to have someone to look up to, and I am just so excited to be that person who they look up to,” she said.
On the track Saturday, FraserPryce was just as impressive, as she anchored the MVP Track Club to a winning time of 43.87 in the 4x100m for clubs and institutions, beating Sprint Tech ( 44.63) into second and University of Technology ( UTech), third in 45.04. The quartet was completed by Nadine Palmer, Carrie Russell and Janeive Russell.
In the men’s 4x100m, UTech (39.35) produced a late burst to edge MVP (39.43) on the line. Sprint Tech were third in 39.97.
KC DOMINATE
Meanwhile, Kingston College dominated the boys’ high-school events, picking up six wins and two second-place finishes. They swept the 4x100m and also scored wins in the Class One and Class Two 4x200m.
In Class Four, KC clocked a record 45.09 to turn back Wolmer’s Boys ( 45.42) and Claude McKay (46.31).
In Class Three, the KC quartet also wrote their names in the record books with a 44.08 winning time. Wolmer’s (45.42) and Claude McKay ( 46.31) were second and third, respectively.
The crack KC Class Two team of Akeem Bloomfield, Jhevaughn Matherson, Shammari Wellington, and Dontre Williams had a brilliant record run of 40.84 as Green Island took second in 43.01.
In Class One, KC stopped the clock at 40.03. Wolmer’s were second in 41.81 and St Elizabeth Technical third in 41.91.
Spalding High won the 4x800m in 7: 45.08 ahead of KC, 7: 48.07, and Holmwood, 7:51.54, while St Elizabeth won the 4x400m in 3: 16.71 from KC, 3: 17.44, and Munro College, 3:17.51.
Among the girls, Edwin Allen High’s Class One team clocked 44.65 to win the 4x100m ahead of Hydel, 46.26, and St Elizabeth, 47.79. Edwin Allen also won the 4x400m Open in 3:41.73, with Holmwood Technical second in 3:47.75.
