Local shooters shine in Mississippi Classic
JAMAICA’S TRIO of Lesgar ‘Speedy’ Murdock, Andrew Yapp and Lennie Moulton continue to shine on the international pistol-shooting scene, returning as winners from the two-day Mississippi Classic, where they faced tough competitors and challenging underfoot conditions.
Grandmaster Murdock topped the Open division, beating 67 challengers on his way to amassing 1,262 points. His closest rival was 130 points adrift in second with 1,131 points.
Lennie Moulton placed second in the B Class Open with 933 points, placing 21st in the 67strong field.
Yapp won the Limited Division, Master Class, holding off a strong challenge from last year’s champion, Grandmaster Steve Sanders.
Yapp finished with 1,211 points as Sanders placed second, 1,190 points, among the 60 shooters in the Limited Division.
The May 15-17 event at the Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club Range brought together 215 competitors across six divisions.
LESS THAN IDEAL
The competition took place under less-than-ideal circumstances as rain had soaked the ground days prior to the match. Some stages were still under water whereas others were filled with mud.
Jamaica’s success in Mississippi followed that of the second staging of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Caribbean Cup, held in Aruba on the weekend of May 2.
Murdock dominated his 16 rivals in the Open Division, amassing 1,048 points to be crowned the high overall winner.

Moulton placed third overall in Open, 885 points, snagging first place in the senior’s category.
Yapp schooled his 36 rivals in the Standard Division, totaling 1,073 points to be crowned the division’s high overall winner.
The trio also received IPSC President’s medals for t heir respective division and category wins at the two-day competition brought together 87 competitors from 11 countries – Curaçao, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, Trinidad, French Guiana, Suriname, Jamaica, the United States and host country Aruba.
Murdock, Moulton and Yapp will next travel to Texas in June to participate at the Double Tap Championships.
Jamaica’s shooters are tuning up ahead of the 2017 World Shoot in France. The second qualifier, Jamaica Cup, will be staged jointly by the Jamaica Rifle Association’s Mountain View range and Woodleigh Shooting Range, Clarendon, on the weekend of July 25.
